I was thinking back to my early driving days since I passed (may 2008) and remembered an incident when I got pulled over by the police at about 2am as one of my headlights wasnt functioning fine, I think it didnt come on under dipped beam, only on full beam or something.

Anyway they asked me a couple of questions was I registered owner etc.

Then said as a moving traffic offence I had to be breathalysed. Came up zero and they allowed me to go.

Could I have gotten points for that? None of them said anything about points and I didnt recieve any paperwork. Would I have had somerthing come through the door if I hadve?

Is it something that you get points for?

Just started worrying as could I have 3 points already and not realised.

Hey :) It's nice to hear from you :) Annoyingly for you I don't have the answer to your question. I just wanted to point out that you passed the same time as me! Nice little coincidence there. It would be nice if there were some more new drivers/younger people but that age group generally does not take as much of an interest in road safety as the elders.

No, they would have given you a NIP at the time.

Ditto - if they pulled you over for a chat then let you go, you won't get any surprises in the post.

Proper traffic policing, note it in your spotter's book as it's a rare bird!

It's happened to me before, been pulled for a failed bulb and breathalysed,(the main reason for that sort of pull at night in my estimation), I would always come out with the line of, " it was ok when I checked it this morning (or sometime today)", not that they would probably believe you but you are supposed to check your lights before every journey and how many of us do?

As stated it's good old fashioned policing where they let you know of a minor offence, check for a more serious offence and let you go with a warning.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

A lot probably depends on drivers attitude and the absence of other issues. Defective headlight good enough reason to stop and breath test. Zero so let go on way they could issue a vehicle defect rectification scheme notice in respect of the head light but what is the point if the driver is co-operative and will obviously get it fixed at the first opportunity. One up for common sense.
