Why is speed camera van out when roadworks are at night?
Tuesday, February 02, 2010, 19:12

DISGUST: I am writing to highlight my disgust at the speed camera van on the A500 eastbound which is on the grass verge by the Sandyford entry slip road.

At present there are 50mph speed limit signs for the roadworks but there are no roadworks. Perhaps there are roadworks at night but not on Friday lunchtime when I first went past the van. It must have been catching thousands of motorists.
I was travelling at approximately 50mph, and buses, lorries and cars were overtaking me. No-one knows if the signs are legitimate or not so I suppose all these motorists are receiving £60 fines and three points. To top it all, on Monday, February 1 I travelled on the westbound carriageway and the van is there again but this time it has orange flashing lights on. Is this van now masquerading as a contractor's vehicle to catch more unsuspecting motorists?

I would like this confirming by whoever is responsible. I have witnessed several dirty tricks from camera vehicles as I cover about 60,000 miles a year.
For example, near Newtown, mid-Wales a van parks by the pumps of a disused petrol station, on an angle, so it looks like a white van has just pulled up for fuel in a hurry.
I have even heard of unmarked police cars driving at 80mph on a deserted M6 in Cumbria in the centre lane, waiting for cars and vans to overtake then booking them.
I'd like to hear from anyone who has received a summons, questioned the legality of it and what kind of a reply did they get.

Because they want to make money!! Their van also sits on the A34 in a layby outside Bradwell hospital after about 3 gatsos to catch people coming from the traffic lights down the hill.

Most of the gatsos in Staffordshire are switched off. The ones left on are usually on big wide roads or just after a limit change....

Likewise ,a bit further south in Warks - the few times I see a van these days( or get told of one from my daughter) ,it's sitting in some dangerous location - I've seen one on a pavement ,trying to hide amongst parked cars .One used to try and hide behind a ( now removed ) bus shelter ( on the pavement ,of course) .
Times I wonder if they're worried that if they don't be seen to be generating enough cash for HMG , that redundancies will follow - sort of idea ,that if no speeding "crimes " are recorded -then the county is safe ,so no enforcement is needed ,anf HMG grant can be reduced 9 sort of thing ,IMHO, this lot of shysters at Whitehall would do ( just to save a few pounds )
