Money raised from Norfolk's speed cameras revealed

Norfolk's speed cameras are raking in nearly £350,000 a year less than previously, according to new figures.
The reduction in the number of fixed-penalty tickets is being hailed by county transport officials as positive sign, suggesting drivers are increasingly aware of cameras and are driving at appropriate speeds.
Newly published figures show that fixed-penalty tickets issued in Norfolk raised £895,320 in 2008-09, compared with £1.238m in the previous year.
Most areas of Britain have seen a marked fall in speeding offences as a result of increased fixed-point and mobile cameras, although Suffolk has bucked the national trend with £1.752m raised in 2008-09 compared with £1.457m in the previous year.

Alec Byrne, chairman of Norfolk County Council's joint casualty reduction partnership, welcomed the reduction and said it suggested motorists were becoming more aware of camera locations and driving at appropriate speeds.
“They have taken notice of them, which is what we want them to do,” he said.
“We have 20 camera sites and five cameras, and we put them in places where accidents have been recorded.
“They are not there to harass motorists. They are there to remind them that in a particular places people do speed and that we want them to be careful.”
Mr Byrne said the joint casualty reduction partnership had made big strides in making the county's roads safer and added that between about 800 and 1,200 people every month now attended speed awareness courses in return for avoiding penalty points on their licences.
The new figures were revealed by the TaxPayers' Alliance and the Drivers' Alliance.
According to them, fixed-penalty fines raised by speed camera partnership schemes across the UK have reached more than £65m a year.
They also published figures they said showed that road casualty numbers have declined at a slower rate since speed cameras were introduced in the early 1990s compared with the rate before then.

A specific speed value is never a measure of safety, so he cannot tell if it is appropriate or not. he would have to sit alongside every road user all the time to be able to state if they were always at an appropriate speed !
This is a total lack of comprehension of the road safety facts. Placing a camera on any road and especially after an accident fails to account for RTTM, is 'selection on bias' and fails to appreciate the true root cause of an accident in the first place so is not going to prevent further accidents.
All that a camera can do is to identify when some road users are illegally travelling above the legal limit. Even then limits are altered very regularly now to an average mean than the safer 85th percentile so all aspects of free travelling speed is skewed against impact speed and how to travel safely and properly.
