Driver sentenced for speed ticket deceit in Bedford
21 July 2010 Last updated at 16:26
A driver from Bedford who paid £300 to a man in a pub to "make a speeding ticket go away" has been given a suspended sentence.
Guiseppe Forcellati, 43, feared he would lose his licence and job after being caught on a speed camera in Bromham, Luton Crown Court heard.
The 43-year-old, of St Michael's Road, admitted perverting the course of justice.
He was given a six-month sentence, suspended for two years.
He was also ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work and given a two-month curfew.
He was fined £150 and banned from driving for 42 days.
'Extreme folly'
The court heard a man he met in a pub provided police with false information about the "driver" and kept the pretence going for three-and-a-half months. Police went to a property in Leicester, where the driver supposedly lived, to find it was just a mailing address.
Prosecutor Daniel Siong said when he was first questioned, Forcellati said he had not been driving but later made admissions.
Paul Tweddle, for the defendant, said: "This was an act of extreme folly and the biggest mistake of his life."
He said the defendant had been told he could be banned because he was 23mph over the speed limit in a 30mph zone and feared his job would be in jeopardy.
Mr Tweddle said he knew that custody was the most likely outcome but urged the court to suspend the sentence and restrict his liberty in other ways.

hereWhen we threaten people's livelihoods from a bad policy (speed cameras), these are the sort of extreme lengths people might consider, when they are so stress and concerned that it somehow actually seemed 'worth it'. It was foolish and it was very silly, plus he now has a worse criminal record for his folly.
It is sad as what might have been an otherwise law abiding citizen is now a criminal which will remain with him forever.
What justice is going on when a citizen even considers that this scheme might have been worth it than face a ban ?
On a completely different case I have heard about a gentleman that was banned for 6mths and it looks now like the ticket is invalid - yet his life is totally changed.
When policy effects people at this fundamental level, we have to be absolutely sure that it is right. Safe Speed is totally convinced that this speed camera policy is totally wrong, and needs to be comprehensively withdrawn from use immediately.
