Potters Bar motorists caught on speed camera
By Ross Logan , Reporter Sunday, 19 December, 2010 - 9:43 AM

SPEEDING motorists are being told to take their foot off the gas – or pay the price.

Police from the Potters Bar safer neighbourhood team spent a day clocking cars driving through Baker Street, as part of a speed enforcement operation.

The road has become a known problem area for speeding, with complaints being made by both residents and the staff and parents of nearby Pope Paul School.

In just two hours, police using speed guns caught five cars driving over the 30mph limit – the fastest being 50mph – issuing each with a £60 penalty and three points on their licence.
And Pc Graham Tippett said the exercise would not be a one-off.

“It would appear that from the speeds some people drive in Potters Bar, we will need to be doing many more speed enforcement operations,” he said.

The officers were joined by Potters Bar Community Safety Partnership chairman John Godfrey and Hertsmere deputy mayor Peter Knell.
Mr Godfrey said: “There is a speed board up that indicates to people what their speed is, and while some people slowed down, others were just oblivious to it.
“A lot of people have complained along that road and I think far more needs to be done. This has been going on for too long.”

Cllr Knell added: “We got quite a few people doing well over 30mph in a built up residential area of Potters Bar.
“It was a very informative day.
“These guns are spot on. People driving big cars don’t realise they’re doing 35 to 40mph while barely touching the pedal.”
Good that Police were stopping people, at least some chance of some proportionate enforcement or advice I hope !
Sad that they all appear to only contemplate that speed is the only necessary issue to be 'resolved'.

..although you do have to ask how close the "nearby Pope Paul School"was, and whether the exercise was carried out during school hours!

From their web-site "Term Ends at 12.15pm, Friday 17 December 2010", so if the exercise was carried out this weekend then the "think of the children" argument would be somewhat reduced.

I wonder where along the road they're conducting the speed enforcement.

Is it outside the school, here?

Or is it a couple of hundred yards further along the road, here?

5 cars speeding (a little) in 2 hours! Not exactly a big problem is it?

I object to the prejudicial tone of this comment.

Claire, where did you get the idea that motorists were stopped at the time?

I agree with your comments and I too was bothered about the 'big cars' and apparent 'ignorant motorists'!

I took it that this statement :
WH Times Ross Logan Sunday Reporter wrote:

[&]

I took that to mean that Police attended and directly issued tickets to those 'offending'. It does certainly sound like they 'just' observed those over the specific limits, than observing bad driving although I'd hope they stopped them too (if any of course !).
:)

I didn't read that as prejudicial. Just a reflection of the fact larger cars tend to be better at isolating the occupant from the outside environment, especially acoustically. Mind you, even quite small modern cars do that

yes, I must admit ,the first time that I had a ride in a Jag (I had an escort at the time, my first car), I was amazed at how fast you were going without realising the speed, even at lower speeds and the driver himself commented, that you didn't realise how fast you are travelling without looking at the speedo.

Of course your comments about sound proofing on larger cars is true but I don't think this was the mindset of Councillor Knell. He is a Conservative but these days this probably means he is a socialist.

What he should have said was "modern cars are quiet and drivers may be travelling faster than they think" which avoids the "big cars" slur with its socially divisive undertones.
