It is interesting to read the comments. Some people just do not seem to be able to comprehend the relationship between speed and actual conditions. When a limit is set, assuming properly and not just on the whim of some local people, at the best it can only be a guide and cannot take into account what is actually happening at any one time.
There is a classic example of this in the New Forest where there is a blanket 40mph limit apart from villages which are now 30mph. Mind, what constitutes a village seems at times to be somewhat stretched. The 40mph limit applies to forest areas as well as open planes. Now I have followed people doing spot on 40mph on the open planes where visibility is generally good, the only trouble is they are still doing 40mph when passing within inches of a pony by the side of the road. The thought that the pony could step into the road has not even entered their heads. They are doing the posted 40mph, so they must be safe, no thought about distancing themselves from the pony and or slowing down. So what has the 40mph limit achieved? Answer, people that do not think. If you hit a pony at 40mph you are likely to kill it and do an awful lot of damage to your car. But this lack of thought is the same on any of our roads and has been agrivated by "speed kills" which has brainwash people into believing that the posted limit is the answer to everything, and is why they believe speed cameras are the salvation to road safety.

Exactly what I've been saying for years, some people believe that good observation means constantly looking at the speedo and Awareness means being aware that they aren't "speeding"
