Speed camera snaps of region's maniac motorists

HURTLING at speeds of almost three times the limit, these danger drivers are putting lives at risk.

Today the Sunday Sun can reveal speed camera snapshots of just some of the North’s worst speeders to hit the roads in recent months.

These images, released to us to highlight dangerous driving, show one driver in the region reaching a shocking 88mph in a 30mph zone.

Traffic bosses branded the drivers who flouted the speed limits as “maniacs.”

Jeremy Forsberg of the Northumbria Safer Roads Initiative said: “It’s disheartening to see speeds this outrageous plaguing our roads and putting innocent lives at risk.

“Some of these are maniac speeds and simply put other road users in danger.”

The 88mph driver, in a foreign car, was pictured at Princess Way in Prudhoe, Northumberland and was fined £60 and got three penalty points.

Another foreign driver was clocked doing 74mph in a 30mph zone on Westgate Road, Newcastle, and also was hit with a £60 fine and three penalty points.

One driver reached a speed of 80mph on the 50mph Chainbridge Road in Blaydon, Gateshead, and was fined £165 and given six penalty points.

Elsewhere one driver was hit with a 40 day disqualification, and a £60 fine after doing 68mph on the 30mph Barrack Road in Newcastle.

Other shamed drivers reached 55mph in a 40mph zone on Newcastle Road, Simonside, Jarrow, 87mph on the 60mph A698 in Berwick and one driver clocked 51mph on the 30mph Durham Road in Sunderland.

They were given fines up to £110 and a range of penalty points.

Mr Forsberg added: “We have been seeing less of these disgraceful speeds and the vast majority of motorists are respectful of others and the traffic laws.

“Some of the penalties for the high speeds are for foreign drivers. A ghost licence is created and penalties awarded so that there is a record of the offence. More progress is being made against foreign drivers who behave inappropriately on our regions roads and drive in a dangerous manner.

“Those exceeding the speed limit in urban areas or rural villages, especially in a 30mph limit are creating a fatal environment for pedestrians. A pedestrian hit at 40mph is four times more likely to die than hit at 30mph. It horrifying to the think of the consequences at 50, 60 and even 80mph.”

Obviously the report doesn't specify any aggravating factors, but based on the speeds and penalties, there seems to be some wild inconsistency there.

Look at the top right photo.
It shows a two-lane, dual carriageway. Granted I don't know the layout outside of the view of the camera, but such a road would ordinarily be safe and legal at 70mph. So why the 30 limit here?

Then they go on to talk about pedestrian casualties. How many pedestrians can one expect to see on a road they cannot cross, like that one?

We should not let theses people spin needle$$ly low limit$ as 'anyone who exceeds them must be a maniac'!

Foreigners. Ghost licences. They didn't actually collect the fines or give the points to these guys did they. What a success. If a patrol car had been there the alleged danger would have been removed immediately.

Self-justification at its worst.

On the face of it, the speeds sound horrific, but if like Hampshire where many of the 30mph limits were 60mph a year ago may not be as bad as is being made out. Lets face it, the speed limits in this Country are a mess, they bear no relationship with what the road is capable of and are set often by Local Councils with no technical considerations at all.

Yes, the speeds were so horrifiic that I thought at first it must be policemen testing cars.

Just PR cr*p from Northumbria.

Does anyone else think the offences and the fines/points they attract are very inconsistent?

If you're foreign, do you just get £60 and 3 points whatever?

I always thought that 30MPH above the limit was an immediate 3 months ban? It seems that travelling at 44MPH over the limit in a 30MPH, isn't as dangerous as travelling just 30MPH over the limit in a 50MPH ???????????????

Well obviously, it's SPEED that kills, not excessive speed so 80MPH being the faster, must be more dangerous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This just goes to show, how safety "savvy", the so called people looking after "road safety", REALLY are!!!

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.
