In the Mail today (not a Murdoch paper!) is a report that, on average, drivers will break the speed limit about 18,000 times during their driving career. It's a wonder that there is anyone still alive in the U.K. given that so many indulge in this dangerous practice. :)

Let's see. Say a driver drives every day between the ages of 20 and 70. This is just over 18,000 days. Breaking the limit once a day? I should think this is a bit of an underestimate.

When talking about x amount of times, (18,000 in this case), I find it hard to understand the logic they use.

For instance, if I am speeding the entire length of a 10 mile journey and get done just the once, as I unluckily pass a scamera, that is one case of speeding.

If on the same journey I stay within the limit but just so happen to go over it past the same scamera it’s still once incidence of speeding even though it’s a far shorter 'blip'. What if I went over the limit a dozen separate times on my route? Is that 12 incidences of speeding?

It doesn’t distinguish between a blip, or many blips, and constant speeding so I’m not sure if it’s 18,000 blips or what. It’s all very woolly...

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

Report here.

If it's breaking the speed limit per journey, it's maybe credible. But each individual instance of going above the limit and dropping back, I'm sure it's a huge underestimate.

Let's say I have a driving career of 50 years (and that will only take me to 67). I drive on 300 days a year, making two specific journeys per driving day, and exceed the speed limit on 90% of occasions. That's 27,000.

Now that my local road has been made a 20 limit, I exceed the speed limit on every single journey I make. Before that, there were some journeys I made where I could credibly claim I didn't.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about this the other day. My 30 mile journey to work goes:

30-40-NSL-30-NSL-40-50-NSL-40-30-NSL-40-NSL-30-NSL-40-NSL-40-NSL-40-NSL-30-NSL-30-NSL

I concluded that exceeding each limit would count as one offence.

So if they put a scamera at each limit you could conceivably get 75 points in a day then JtB  (Assuming you wouldn't do the same on the way back  )

I was thinking the same as you Peter; that it's likely to be way in excess of 18,000, especially for :bluelight:
