Speaking to a friend today who told me they had been done for speeding in Berkshire and offered a fine and speed awareness course in lieu of points. No brainer, right?

To dodge the points they have to satisfactorily complete the course the rules of which include not arriving late (okay) but not arriving early either!

Apparently they will incur the wrath of the course administrator if they fail to arrive exactly on time. Now I know the world's gone mad.

Because if you can't turn up at a time accurate to the second regardless of road conditions, how are you supposed to be able to drive at the one true safe speed for all circumstances as prescribed to you by the little red+white signs?

These things usually have some discussion or seminar element to them, so be sure your friend finds out how many people are coming and how many instructors and brings an appropriate amount of hand outs with safe speed and ABD statistics. Bonus points if they can convince the instructor as well as the other patrons.

I suggested that but she's a wimp. Just wants to get in, out and avoid flunking the course for being subversive.

Pah!

It is easy to turn up bang on time.... Calculate the time required to get there at 80 mph on a motorway and then set off ONE MINUTE earlier and travel at 55 mph. We're told that any journey only takes a minute longer if you go slower, so put the theory to the test.

I always try and arrive earlier than the appointed time as a courtesy to whoever I am going to see.

I they gave me a hard time for being early that would know exactly what I thought of them in no uncertain way.

Sometimes being a bit older is a good thing. I am no longer frightened by :bib: or :judge: and have no problem speaking my mind. :soapbox: I'm not abusive, just not afraid to put my point of view to anyone regardless of their position. :D

But you don't need to be old to tell the so-called authorities to stick it where the sun don't shine - we started the punk era in the UK 30 years ago. Nobody gives a hoot anymore, and that's why we have more chavs, punks, speeders, yahoos and yobbos than anywhere else. Standards have splipped - just look at some of the posts people make on this web site!

i read about somewhere in the UK last year which was offering this alternative to points i.e. pay the fine and go on a speed awareness course. BUT the course costs the offender over £100. still better than getting points i suppose but the authorities will just use it to scam much more cash out of folk.

Here in New Zealand you don't get points on your licence for a speed camera fine, so they get paid as it is cheaper and easier for most people (over the phone by credit card) than taking a few hours to bother defending it. Everyone knows it's about revenue raising and nothing to do with road safety. It is then debatable if you have to inform your insurance company about these offences, but then insurance isn't even compulsory,so if they try and up the premium you don't have to pay at all.

That's fine for rich toffs who don't care about a few quid. Points are better because they cause trouble whoever you are!

Rich toffs are still better off with points. They can probably afford to lose their licences - they can either make other arrangements to get to work or they can afford not to work for a few months.

Cheers
