Hi

Yesterday I drove past one of those speed camera vans on a fast B Road in Norfolk and not sure whether I've been caught...

The camera was set up on a corner at the end of a long straight. So, from a driving point of view, you'd be driving along the straight, then start going around the corner to the right, and then see the police van that was parked on the kerb the other side of the road with the camera pointing at you. I think they had a view about 100 yards up the straight.

The main thing here though, is that I was coming from the other direction. I came round the bend (I think at about 75mph although I dont remember too well), past the van which was on my left (I didn't recognise it as a police van - doh!), and then onto the straight - I might even have been overtaking someone, so in other words on the other side of the road.

So, were they just catching drivers coming the other way off the straight or could they have nabbed me going away from them speeding?

TT Alex

Its a lottery.

They can check traffic in both directions but they usualy catch traffic comming towards them, I think this is because they have to "track" a target for a few seconds. Easier to do when they are comming towards you. Also the can only catch one at a time so if there was traffic comming the other way they could have missed you. If you were overtaking it may have caught their eye.

You will soon know within the next 14 days....thats the time limit they have to get an NIP to you if you own the vehicle. It must also be posted first class.

The vans I have seen in Norfolk are yellow.

I hate this waiting game!

In the meantime, I am going to get myself a detector. I've read up a bit on them but I'm really not sure which one to go for. Any suggestions?

I've got the 'Safeplate' number plate spray.

Useless and illegal.

As for camera detectors go for one of the GPS based units.

You can get combined GPS and detector units but the detectors are not completely reliable and if the government ban them as they say they will then you will have t o get either a new unit or have the detector side disabled.
