Olympic spy cam to snare your car
By MATT WILKINSON - Published: 03rd June 2012

DRIVERS straying into VIP car lanes during the Olympics will be SNARED by hidden cameras and immediately FINED £130.

And campaigners yesterday lashed out at the secret £500,000 network which reads registration plates.

Fat-cats in Olympic cars have exclusive access to the 109-mile congestion-free lanes linking posh hotels with venues.

The cams will be placed on the 30-mile central London stretch to catch intruders and automatically fire off fines.

But Steve McNamara, chief of the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association, warned: “We’re going to end up with chaos.” And civil liberties campaigner Nick Pickles, of Big Brother Watch, said: “It will be a disaster if the Olympic legacy is the kind of state surveillance you’d expect in a sci-fi movie.”

But operating officer Garrett Emmerson said: “Games lanes will ensure we get athletes and officials to events on time.”

What will foreigners think ! Gees that is outrageous !
I can understand that they want priorities to ensure that all taking part and officials are there on time and not stressed but surely they are all housed around the event and within walking distance ?
To make Londerners lose a lane seems pretty harsh, but to say that you will get fined for it is just shameful.

Important people do not walk.
They are driven in large expensive motor vehicles.
The more important, the larger the vehicle.
And note that athletes are not that important.
Athletes are just there to provide an excuse for the games.
The Really Important People do not run, walk or jump. They are driven.

It certainly does not make it feel like a 'community' UK event but for an exclusive few! From the ticket fiasco, to the get there by public transport and then VIP's go via own lane ! (In London too which needs all it's space for everyone!).
Personally I think all spaces shoudl be a come and go as you please with no cost to the general public and so far less 'control' to it all !
That way you might get to see what you want and not what you are told you are allowed to !

The 'Shared space' concept needs to be seriously promoted to Boris!

So do the ANPR record every cars movement all around the event ? Probably I guess! Very sad.

The Olympics have far outgrown their purpose and are now just an ego trip for politicians and officials.

I would start by deleting all events from the games which are scored by opinion rather than objective measurement. So, all events with "style points" would be out. Then I would delete all events not requiring high levels of physical fitness, for example, rifle shooting and archery.

I'm not even sure that any events which require advanced technical equipment should be in the games. What about the equestrian events and cycling? Should they be in? If so, should all the competitors use identical equipment?

Move it back to Greece.
Make it permanent there.

Wow Malcolm, I thought it was just me who thought that way.

Why is it that the best Moto GP rider is hailed as the best, when Ducati's bike isn't the best?

The same goes for F1 :?

In the 100 meters they have what you would call an equal playing field, drugs aside.

My favorite which will instantly distant myself from every red blooded male in this country, I don't bother with football. I couldn't care less about it.

Exactly who or what are you supporting? Aston Villa? The Blues?

I've said it before but what you appear to be supporting is players from any continent that a team can buy. (My footie mate hates me for saying this).

If you honesty want to know the best rider or driver the only proper way would be to put them in exactly the same machine. When you hail that Liverpool won or are the best, how many are from Liverpool.

I don't get it and never have but don't beat up on me over this, my mate supports The Baggies, whatever they are and if I've spelt it correctly...

I know, I'll enter the Tour de France on a Penny Farthing while someone else is on something weighing the same as a bag of sugar.

Or, as a manager of a big football team, I'll pay £10,000,000 for a skillful black guy, we couldn't produce, from Africa and say he plays for us. What is that "us" and why do "we" feel so superior for being so great on the backs of not very British or 'It's our city', not our city people?

You know what Big Jom, you have a knack for great ideas! There's not a 'nodding wall' in Kent.

Don't worry, Tone, I am not a football fan either. Football is very environmentally damaging. All that travelling to and from the other ends of the country for little purpose. I reckon not many fans travel by bicycle. :)

In the javelin and discus there is a pool of equipment and competitors take pot luck as to what they draw. Suppose there were a pool of Olympic bicycles for competitors to use?

Tone, it's very hard to believe because of the media hype and over-exposure on TV, but I truly think that we who don't believe that foot-the-ball is the be-all and end-all are in the majority! :D

I kinda don’t mind Oscar, because the roads are practically baron when these things come around :D It’s how I remember them back in the mid 70s :cloud9:

And as for the ‘did it go over or not’ footie tripe? Just more proof that the game is unfair and the die-hards prefer a good fight or argument instead, when it could so easily be resolved. Look how tennis has been transformed because of modern technology.

Anyway, on Olympics. I’m only interested in two things; the super heavyweight weightlifting and 100 metres. I want to see a Russian guy clean and jerk the equivalent of a Hummer over his head and Mr Bolt break 9 seconds :D
