Just wondered if anyone knew the answer to these questions.

I was travelling back from Dorset last night late at night and there was a flashing sign all on its own that said 50.(it was orange) There was only one and nothing else. Everyone around me was still doing 70+ but I had slowed down to about 55 as I wasnt sure. I assume this was not in operation or something? What are the only variable speed limits that are enforced?

Also. Anyone local to the area know about the average speed cameras that are on the m3 southbound as you enter it from the m25? I always thought specs had to be on both sides of the motorway,( ie northbound and southbound for m3) as when I was coming home I saw no 50 markers or anything on the northbound. Can they be on one carridgeway only or did I miss them coming home?

Finally on the m35 between watford and m3 it says ;variable speed limits and occasionally on the board above there was a sign that said '60'. Is this the enforced limit? And do they come with cameras? I was confused as people were still doing 70+. I thought they were camera controlled.

Little help with these would be appreiceated

Thanks.

2 things, the M3 does not have variable speed limits and there is no M35 :D

The orange sign you refer to must have been an advisory matrix, and since you were coming from Dorset, I also assume you were close to Rownhams services. I am pretty sure that this sign always reads 50, regardless of traffic flow. Apart from one occasion when I passed it and it was reading 70!!!! That was helpful advice :loco:

I assume you mean the M25, which does have variable speed limits, and as far as I am aware there is no legislation that says that average speed cameras have to be on both sides of the road. The stretch of the M3/M25 which I think you mean always used to be 70 with advisory 50 limits, which was sneakily changed to a mandatory 50 at the same time the cameras went up. As far as I am aware these are live and enforcing.

As said, and said many tines on here- AFAIK, the only legal sign is those described in the road signs thingy- all others are advisory, as are the orange signs on the motorway. BUT BEWARE - you could end up in hot water for ignoring one of these signs if an accident followed . Reminder of a certain ,Mr Bador's comments on the rules - for the guidance of wise men ,and etc. After that he lost his legs in an accident trying to prove the rules didn't count.
