Right forum ? Move if not please.

Over the past few days I've wondered about the origin of some driving customs, like give way to traffic coming up a hill ( possibly one that's gone by the boards ) ,and give way to traffic from the right.

I can remember one uncle boasting of his Austin 55' ability to get up a certain hill in third. When he started driving , it was a good vehicle that made that hill in first, and stopping meant having to reverse a good bit. Possibly this is where this practice of giving way to uphill traffic came from ?
From right- I can only surmise that the vehicle on left would have a better view of the other vehicle. ( I know it's now HC,but I'm looking at origins, not what is now written)

Anyone delved into the history of these?

I was always led to believe, that the, "give way to traffic coming uphill", rule, goes back to the days of horse and cart, where obviously it would be more difficult to ascend, once the momentum had been lost. I can see how, in snow and bad conditions it is still a rule to follow but at the same time it may be more difficult to stop on a steep hill in these conditions when going downhill, than coming up.... a difficult one to judge in these conditions.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.
