Following a consultation last year, the DfT have just issued a new speed limit guidance document:

Department for Transport Circular 01/2013

The document can be downloaded here.

Why, why, why do the DfT even bother (unless it's to keep someone in a job).

None of our local councils stick to the guidelines (pointing out that they are just that,,,Guidelines)

Shropshire Council is even arrogant enough to make their own Guidelines which suggests they have better road safety experts than the Government.

Perhaps the DfT should look to Shropshire council for the next edition?

Local councils etc - setting safe limits .
That sounds like something I read in a history lesson about a PM with a bit of paper in his hand .
Last lot of reductions we hasd in Warks both police and County councilllors objected ,but the Counth Highway officers knew best .It cost ( from memory)£4m to replace the signs .Next thing they had no money to repair potholes .

Drivers are like donkeys -they respond best to a carrot, not a stick .Road safety experts are like Asses - best kept covered up ,or sat on

The objectives of the guidance are:

- to provide up-to-date and consistent advice to traffic authorities
- to improve clarity and therefore greater consistency of approach when setting speed limits across the country
- to enable the setting of more appropriate local speed limits, including lower and higher limits where conditions dictate
- to achieve local speed limits that better reflect the needs of all road users
- to ensure improved quality of life for local communities and a better balance between road safety, accessibility and environmental objectives, especially in rural communities

So, road safety is relegated to the last objective and then it can be traded for environmental objectives?

Don't bother reading any more. It's politically correct tosh.
