I think this could work, reducing the speed limit for new drivers to 50MPH on NSL roads (although i would guess most fatalities are people exceeding the 60MPH limit), so long as they had to show a P plate which would allow other drivers to make allowances for them (maybe a PR plate for the 40MPH everywhere driver too ..... ).

I think the 60MPH limit would only work if they were to be banned from the third lane of motorways though.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

They already have something similar in Northern Ireland and the general consensus is that it's really counter-productive. In practice it's very hard to enforce (how can a camera tell the experience level of the driver?) and it will delay the process of new drivers building up the full set of driving skills.

And in many areas of the country :nsl: on single-carriageway rural main roads is now a thing of the past anyway :x
