Leila Crofts was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing in Branksome, Dorset, with her au pair on Friday when she was hit and knocked unconscious. She was taken to Southampton General Hospital where her condition was described last night as being critical but stable. Police said that shortly afterwards the cyclist got off his bike, picked it up and walked into nearby gardens.
A man aged 38 presented himself at Bournemouth police station on Saturday morning. He is in custody helping police with their inquiries.

While I am pleased that a man has presented himself to the police, it would have been better had he obeyed the priority rules of the pedestrian crossing. Should we change these rules to allow cyclists to make unimpeded progress? IMO if this man had been in a car, he would have stopped at the crossing.

You don't know that. Hundreds of pedestrians a year are injured by cars hitting them at crossings, and we know some of them simply drive off, so again, your implied assertion that a registration plate makes people perfect drivers/riders is utter nonsense.

WEEPY- I see it daily - cars stop for pedestrians on crosings- cyclists rarely do . It's something car drivers are trained to do,i.e. "ANTICIPATE THE ACTIONS OF OTHER ROAD USERS", and in the case of cyclists, class them as a danger and expect them to disregard all road safety laws . IMHO the only way to make streets cycle friendly is to issue pedestrians with large sticks ( or baseball bats) to "persuade" cyclists to respect pedestrian areas. my case- a few weeks ago, i biought a window pole and carried it through our town centre. I noted that no cyclist tried any thing funny / took the mick when I had this in my hands.

Drivers are like donkeys -they respond best to a carrot, not a stick .Road safety experts are like Asses - best kept covered up ,or sat on
