I cant find any media coverage of this in print ... but been on air at 8:05am this morning on the BBC 3 Counties Radio this morning that covered this story.
Iain Lee standing in for Justin Dealey, and this discussion is carrying on on The JVS show (Johnathan Vernon-Smith).
This chap has been regularly monitoring people's speed as they go between Sandy to Beeston area, and claims that on the 50mph road people are doing 58-65mph.
He is calling for average speed cameras to be installed.
Whilst there have been (from what I gathered) two fatal accidents here, but this therefor requires thorough investigation by proper engineers and appropriate road improvements made.
Ellie Pearson from Brake also put her points across.
Listen again is possible later.
----

It is sad that someone buys into the belief that speed is the panacea to road safety.
Ellie tried to make the point about impact speed but failed to totally understand that people react before impact therefor impact speed is less than travelling speed.

Is his camera calibrated?

Just because the limit is 50mph doesn't mean that it is unsafe at higher speeds. If "everyone" is doing 58 - 65mph then the limit is wrong and it should be 60mph (85th percentile).

I live "down the road" from Beeston....
I suggest a look with streetview (locator below) before suggesting "engineering", which would involve total destruction of the village WHICH THE A1 PASSES THROUGH THE CENTRE OF.
Start at 52.116547,-0.286511 where the 50 limit starts, dropping from ## 60 mph ##
Have a look at the junction which comes next, with central res crossing point. Carry-on driving, and note that some roads have direct access to the A1 dual carriageway. Go into the village and note the pedestrian bridge, at least one death was from a person trying to not use the bridge.
Note the bus stop.
The device used by the Beeston guy was sold as "measure the speed of baseballs", so not home-office approved.
Print Edition
Note the speed cameras in the village, and also note that the 60 limit southbound is camera enforced as well.

Finally found some media coverage on this :

Beeston villager uses own 'baseball' speed gun on A1

Michael Lacey Michael Lacey said he recorded cars going at 82 mph through Beeston in Bedfordshire

A man who bought a speed monitoring device to clock motorists near his Bedfordshire village home says police need to do more to stop them.

Michael Lacey bought online a US radar device originally designed to record the speed of baseballs.
He said he sometimes records 90% of drivers going faster than the 50 mph limit on the A1 near the village.
Bedfordshire Police said they patrolled the area and took action against speeding drivers.
The speed limit on the A1 is 70 mph, which drops to 50 mph on the approach to Beeston, where there is a speed camera.
Mr Lacey said the problem had been "ongoing" so he took it upon himself to get "evidence" for police.
He said people walking on the 3ft 6ins (1.1 m) wide footpath next to the road were at risk.

'Alarming' speeds
He revealed he had found some drivers travelling more than 30 mph above the limit.
"The speeds I have been recording are quite alarming," he said.
"There are certain times of the day when it's prevalent - the worst is between 17:00 and 19:00 on the northbound carriageway."
During those times, according to his device 90% of drivers he had recorded were travelling between 56 mph and 60 mph with others doing speeds of up to 82 mph, he said.

Mr Lacey said he had told the police - who assured him they were doing "everything within their powers" - but he wants more measures.
"The obvious answer is a speed limit reduction or average speed cameras through the whole section."

Bedfordshire Police said officers understood Mr Lacey's concerns but there was already a speed camera in place, along with clear speed limit signs.
While a device like the one used by Mr Lacey may give a "rough idea" of speed, only "official" cameras could provide an accurate reading which would be admissible in court, a spokesman added.
A spokesman said: "Officers from the Roads Policing Unit also patrol the area regularly and take action against motorists who do not observe the speed restrictions."
It is the Highways Agency's responsibility to address requests for a speed reduction on a major road, he added.
A Highways Agency spokesman said the accident record at the location was "below the average for this type of road" but it would "continue to monitor safety on the A1".

Yep it does beg the question as to what was the speed limit and what ought it to be !
Again a return of police patrols would help and encourage safe driving too!
We have seen an ever increasing number of individuals trying to monitor or police the roads and the authorities ought to be recognising their mistakes in not providing proper policing. Listen to the public is one thing actually doing something positive is another.

Mind even 'home office approved' has now been altered so that any home office person can approve it ! They are changing rules and regulations, to suit the speed camera industry. It is so very sad.

From memory as far back as approx 1993, it's been 50 through sandy since then . What makes it stand out is that this was the first camera I ever saw .

The speed limit is 50mph as you approach Sandy on the A1, it stays at 50 through Sandy and through Beeston, then changes to 60mph a mile the other side of Beeston. It stays at 60 until just before Biggleswade. The A1 is regularly patrolled by police. There are 3 speed cameras in the Biggleswade - Sandy stretch. Until you have driven that stretch at rush-hour, particularly Beeston, you will not understand it. Rush-hour is from about 0700, when the trucks hit the road, until about lunchtime. Then from about 3, to 7 in the evening.
In case you are motoring along the A1 ... the police are ACTIVELY enforcing the new anti-social driving legislation at the black-cat roundabout (A603/A1 junction, near Roxton) ... VERY actively. Those of you unfortunate enough to have used it will understand why.
