Maximum fines imposed by magistrates in England and Wales are set to rise sharply in an effort to crack down on offenders.

The government's proposals could see the highest fine for speeding on the motorway increase from £2,500 to £10,000

For the most serious offences such as drink driving, magistrates would be allowed to impose unlimited fines.

All ¨summary¨ offence penalties are raised, not just motoring offences. Anything dealt with in a magistrates court has the penalties raised, by about X4, as soon as the SI is signed into law.

It is a disgusting way to raise taxes to have the Courts pay for themselves. In other words the Gov can no longer afford a Justice System!
The cost of nearly everything has massively increased - or will be but many already have! The cost of my case over the failed car delivery would now be about £160 from £90 ! It's disgusting as many will be unable to even seek justice as it is priced out of the market for them.
So what and where will people turn to ? The Bar pro bono and mediation/arbitration?
Or will many start to make their own 'courts' ?
This must not be allowed to happen for those which I being 'tabled' ! It's just appalling.

God news, Jo- but this the fine increase smacks of a way to claw some money back from the motorists that our Camera empire cant financially rape. With courses raising the speed limits before it goes to court, HMG are on a lowered income. So ,less cases, means they have to increase charges. And that is PRIVATE ENTERPRISE, Tory style in UK LTD 2014.
