Today in the morning- BBC1 "Neighbourhood Blues( or something like)", there was another push of Community Speed watch ,with Geriatrics being used to ,basicly ,do Police work ( thy called ir "road safety") . Interestingly, there's a petition around ( featured on PH,for some on here, to ask why ,older drivers need to be tested, when the Insurance Industry loads young drivers. But that's another story. BUT, if the aged are not fit to drive, why ARE they judged fit to judge driving standards, based on speed alone ?

Drivers are like donkeys -they respond best to a carrot, not a stick .Road safety experts are like Asses - best kept covered up ,or sat on

Because young people won't do the job.
Simple.
As for old drivers being worse than young:
"Young drivers (17-24 years old) are at a much higher risk of crashing than older drivers. Drivers aged 17-19 only make up 1.5% of UK licence holders, but are involved in 12% of fatal and serious crashes.
Data on British drivers shows that:
Drivers aged 16-19 are more than twice as likely to die in a crash as drivers aged 40-49
One in four 18-24 year olds (23%) crash within two years of passing their driving test
Young male drivers are involved in many more crashes than young female drivers"

That's that old chestnut roasted.
Not many elderly drivers stealing cars and going for "joy" rides.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

The elderly are chosen because :
Many are retired, on Councils, talk to each other, spread the virus of 'slow is safer', want a purpose, and have much time of their hands.
Sadly they are in essence encouraged through propaganda to 'help'. By being there it also appears to add weight to the propaganda and so on ...

The young are busy, inexperienced, less easily convinced and typically lack control from authority.
