Another rant from me, i live in South Wales, one of those small towns where inappropiate speed cams (the ones on the wide road sections with no pedestrians) ruin every journey.

I noticed today as i cut through a local housing estate to avoid seeing the mobile speed cam on the main road that i seem to be one of a growing number who would sooner drive through a housing estate than trundel along the main roads around the town.

An example of how speed cameras have a bad effect on everyone not just drivers, the placement of speed cameras where i live make no sense, they are just near the main incoming/exit roads where no one lives or walks and logic would say the limit should be 40/50.

It makes my blood boil!

Yep..the spin off benefit is that I have managed to cut journey times as well. Not so much conjestion at daft roundabouts and traffic lights.

The only good thing to come out of cameras is that it has caused me to find other routs away from the trunk roads that are less busy...

They also encourage drivers to find the small country roads that don't have the volume of traffic required to justify a scamera. By this I mean the "white" roads; you do have to watch out for horses, tractors, scout groups etc, but it is nice to be able to drive properly.

In the Solihull area even the "yellow" country roads are now being covered with stupid features like 30mph limits on roads that have only fields to either side, and the recently introduced 10" high "speed tables" across junctions that are very poorly marked and signed. I suppose these are slightly better than the slalom courses (chicanes) that they are also so fond of. These people must either know that Kyoto is complete nonsense, or just don't care about the significantly higher CO2 levels that these features cause. Oh and drivers are having to concentrate more on what the idiots have done to the road (+speedo) so that is less concentration free for the things we should really be looking for - like children.

Absolutly agree. I find it far less stressful to drive in roads I'm confidant there are no cameras then one the ones that you know will have them, and the talivans - even if you have never driven on them before. It so obvious, the wide open carriageway, sweeping bends and houses(if there are any) offset from the road. All the ingreidents for a nice safe and efficiant road with a 40 or maybe even 50mph limit. But oh no, they have to slap a reduced limit of 30 on it with loads of enforcement. If possible I try to avoid these roads and use motorways, rural roads and housing estates where possible if its a good cut-through. The main roads are now losing their traditional speed advantage.

In Burnley we have a half constructed ring-road(aren't they all?) which was engineered to be a 40mph limit and was, but now it's down to 30mph. Oddly enough the only fixed cameras and talivans are set up on the widest stretch with no houses and very few pedestrains. They are near the Quen Vic pub if anyone knows the area. It's bizarre.
