THE controversial speed limit on a stretch of road may be raised after motorists were caught breaking it on camera.

Lib dem gets busted by a camera....poetic justice I’d say

So no representation on the committee from normal drivers then?

Whilst I sympathise with the majority of ordinary folk who've been caught, I actually think that the councillor getting 'done' is a good thing.

'35 in a 30 where loads of similar roads are 40 or 50' Yes, I think vast amounts of us who post on this forum feel very much likewise and share the 'fury' at what appear to be the capricious mis-use of speed camera technology.

I still think we have to become politically active on local councils and start defeating the incumbant councillors (from whichever party) who are responsible for 'road' affairs - especially those who preach cameras=road safety.

Mr Parker said: "I think the limit is 30mph because it is in a built up area and drivers are approaching a roundabout."

Whats the roundabout got to do with it. Do we road users need to be told how fast to go round a roundabout?

Official figures show that since 1996 there have been no fatal accidents on this stretch of road, with just seven slight injury collisions.

Clearly a rvenue earner then

Quote:
Coun Wright, Liberal Democrat member for the Hart ward, was caught doing 35mph during the last check. She said: "I am furious. There is no reason for that stretch to be 30mph. Other similar roads are 40mph and 50mph."

I wish we could all use that argument. I live in Norfolk but work in Suffolk, where there is a real diference in the limits imposed.

Quote:
Mick Bennett, of the Cleveland Safety Camera Partnership, said: "Our objective is to reduce casualities on our roads by reducing speeds and changing drivers' attitudes towards speed, particularly in areas where we know that other road users are at risk."

They always roll out the same old lines, even when they clearly have f*** all to do with the subject in hand.

edited to remove expletive. RP

I'll just correct the slight typo:

Quote:
Mick Bennett, of the Cleveland Safety Camera Partnership, said: "Our objective is really nothing to do with reducing casualities on our roads by reducing speeds or changing drivers' attitudes towards speed. It's just particularly we know in these areas most road users are not a risk but they do have substantial funds in their wallets and it's quite easy to intimidate most into coughing up a small, erm, donation."

Another case of a local representative "customising" their regular driving route and it's just luck if you happen to use that same route.

Regards

Andrew

I know this bit of road very well - two lane dual carriageway. If you've come down from the A19, speed limits go NSL (60) on wide single carriageway, 50 on dual two-lane carriageway, round a roundabout, then 40 on dual two-lane carriageway, then 30 on same road for no obvious reason. It has been like that for many years. Continuance after the roundabout is dual two-lane carriageway with 30 limit although the houses are behind a separate service road. There are no Gatsos in the Cleveland Constabulary area apart from the A177 at Thorpe Thewles, so scam vans are used everywhere and were used in this case (they catch loads of drivers here and make lots of money at £60 a throw).
It takes great discipline to observe the 30 limit on this dual carriageway as everyone else goes belting past. It is really difficult to see what the danger is that requires a 30 limit.
You'd think the locals would be able to spot a scam van but obviously not. :)
