This morning's observed drive, after a gap of 6 weeks since the last one, indicates that it's about time for the IAM test. I have got 1s (out of 1-4) for everything except a 2 for making progress (see post passim). So I can drive to please the wife, as required, but change my driving to make more progress when required. One or two glitches remain - in 2 hours a couple of times I changed gear whilst rounding a corner, I needed two attempts to parallel park in a tight spot, and the 3-point turn in a narrow street wasn't quite perfect. I am never going to agree with my observer about acknowledging people who give way where they are required to do so as opposed to being courteous. He also agrees that crossing white lines in certain circumstances is acceptable (again see posts passim) though the IAM can't be seen to condone it - so I'll use my judgement.

This could also be related to driving a diesel which has a vary narrow power band compared with a petrol. I find mine doesn't have the overlap of gears I am used to.

I'm sure our HGV driving members have to change gear often while rounding corners.
