Hi, Im new here so if this is in the wrong place, sorry, and could someone please move it.

Anyway, I cant remember where now, but I'm positive that I recently saw/hear/read somwhere that on the Isle of Mann, there are no speed limits, once out of the towns.

I just thought that Id ask, because I might holiday there this year. Plus, just for my own benefit Id like to know. Thanks for any feedback.

I've just returned from a holiday in the Isle of Man. I've a few tips for anyone who's thinking of driving a car there.

You won't find any fixed speed cameras on the island, but from time to time you may see a couple of hi-viz vested policemen with a tripod mounted radar, like the one I saw on the Douglas - Peel road.

Speed limit signs are the usual , the only difference being that some signs are backed by a yellow square.
In a lot of the rural areas you may find that some speed limit and other road signs are obscured by vegetation. When the local roads authority do bother to trim all that growth back, they've a bad habit of leaving some of the cuttings in the road.

When you drive near a school during normal school hours you should see digital speed limit signs that are temporarily lit up and display-20MPH SCHOOL ZONE. Many of the residential areas also have green-coloured 20mph speed limit signs and are known as Home Zones. There are some traffic calming measures in place near 30mph zones, you may see a group of three small speed bumps in the road, big enough to warn you but small enough to cause no damage your vehicle.

Be wary, because many of the locals don't seem to know what "right of way" is and also in some of the rural areas, like Foxdale, the locals and visitors have to leave their vehicles parked in the road. The island has a lot of unmanned level crossings without barriers.

Using a mobile phone while driving carries a £1000 fine. By the way, check if you can use your mobile on the island. There is only one network there-UK MANX and there's no GSM roaming agreement. The local network may block all your calls and you may only be able to send text messages at international rate.

Don't bother to visit Port Soderick. It's closed!

They still have red phone boxes and one pound notes.

They also have a few antique cars in almost new condition. Don't be surprised if a Triumph Herald, Hillman Imp or a Morris Minor goes by.
In Douglas they have one horsepower vehicles that produce recyclable exhaust emissions.

Petrol is very expensive. Expect to pay a minimum of 93 to 95p per litre.
