If a camera (gatso) is triggered by one car overtaking another in front of it can it determine which vehicle triggered it? i.e. if both vehicles are side by side when it flashes.

The Gasto cannot, but the corroborating pair of photos will clearly show an operator reviewing the film which vehicle was going too fast (might be both of them).

However that is dependent on the interval between the flashes being correct, which it appears that they often are not (should be 0.5 seconds) but as the Notso Accurate campaign shows they can be set up to 0.7 seconds which adds 40% to the implied speed, and is a major point of concern.

Yes, but not directly.

When a gatso is triggered it will take two photos of the sensor area, exactly 0.5 seconds apart (unless they are nosoaccurate). The speed of any vehicles in that area can be confirmed with use of the graded lines painted on the road acting a reference for the distance travelled in the time between the photos. Application of a simple equation will yield the genuine speeds of both vehicles. The operator can then decide if the prosecution against either driver (or both if necessary?) should proceed.

edit, just safe rewolf's post - great minds think alike :)

If its a gatso the speed is confirmed by the road markings. Not sure about forward facing truvelos. I suspect that the picture cannot be used if there are two cars in the photo.

For Truvelos the under-road sensors that trigger the picture only cover one lane, and so it can only be one vehicle - the one that drove over the sensor.
