Today I have been on the dreaded A19 from Murton up to Sunderland and back.

May I say that I am not suprised at the appalling accident record on this dual carriageway?

In good driving conditions - dry except for unneeded salt on a very mild day. Lane discipline is terrible. Speeds of vehicles vary between 40 mph and 90 mph - it's a 70 mph limit except for a short stretch of 50 mph through non-existent roadworks. The worst places are at slip roads where drivers come charging out in both lanes at once into a busy road.

Then there are the drivers who overtake when you are at or near the speed limit, pull over in front of you and slow down to less than the speed you were doing when overtaken.

I'll make a note to avoid this road as much as possible.

Not one of our better roads and we have unmarkeds along there too

Funnily enough - A19 through Co. Durham - one of roads we issue more fines and fixed penalitiesas well!

Looks like we shall have to up the presence and profile - ta for the tip

Is that what they mean by better policing by intelligence?

Can you do anything about the road works? :( I cant say I know the road, but I recognise the behaviour!

A traffic car or two will make drivers take a bit more care. I generally don't use the northern section in Co Durham/ Tyne & Wear, but once a week I go to Hartlepool, turning off at Elwick - a notorious place for fatal accidents. If it is dark or visibility is impaired for any reason I always carry on to the A179 sliproad go over the bridge and back down the southbound carriageway to avoid turning right. IMHO the gaps should be closed all along this section, including farm crossings (as I've seen them used for U-turns). A nuisance to some drivers maybe but a much safer outcome for everyone. BTW please can the Highways Agency leave a small gap in the barriers so that I can get my bike through (not like at the Black Swan crossroads south of Crathorne). :x
