I honestly don't think there are many people left that haven't at some point been caught for speeding. Most of us drive safely and at some point break the speed limit without even knowing it.

How many times have you come across a set of road works on a Sunday Moring with no one working yet the speed limit is set to 30-40. Everyone is breaking the speed limit, but this is where they are starting to place temporary speed cameras. The road works can end up being profitable businesses for local authorities so coned areas stay coned for longer.

The latest GPS Radar Detection systems can avoid all this pain, they cost as little as £310.00 and really do work. We do various Road Shows including the NEC and still get asked by people whether our systems really work.

What are people's views about which of these systems are the best, in terms of price, ease of installation and operation, and accuracy of information?

Regards,

Peter

I have just been to the motor show at the NEC in birmingham. (Bit of a let down really) However having got 3 points for speeding and being a rep I invested in a device which cost me £240 which has GPS and laser.

A snooper s3 sits on my dash plugs into my cigarette lighter socket and so far (10 days use 1400 miles) has warned me of all the gatsos I've passed and a few (what I am told) mobile sites. I know there is an s4 snooper which has more bells and whistles for £350ish but i am a bit tight.

Well impressed!

I have got a snooper R6 which is quite sophisticated and alerts me to all gatsos, truvellos, specs etc and also flags up as "risk alert" all known locations where talivans are likely to be lurking around the next corner. This is all done by GPS. Additionally it has a detector that picks up laser and radar "guns". On one hand this is of doubtful value as it might pick up a laser gun at exactly the same time as the gun spots the car....not much use....on the other hand it can pick up those chaps who lurk on bridges with mobile equipment over dual carriageways up to two miles out.

This bit of kit costs about £400.

There is one serious drawback peculiar to my own set-up. The GPS antenna is dash mounted....this gives restricted satellite access and can mean losing one's satellite "lock" without any warning. I can check that everything is functioning by glancing at the screen but this is even more distracting than looking at the speedometer. I know perfectly well that the answer is to have an external antenna to scan 360 degrees and pick up constantly eight or more satellites ( it needs 4) but I have not had this done due to an aesthetic reluctance to mar the gorgeous flowing lines of my Italian flying machine!

When I next have the car serviced I will enquire as to how this can be solved without drilling any holes!

My overall view is that the GPS devices do work very well. While they do not, alas, transform ones car into any sort of "stealthmobile" they do have the very useful function of alerting drivers ( one can set the device to give a different alert for over/under the prevailing speed limit at an approaching bandit ) to impending scameras sited in locations that have no obvious correlation to safety or road conditions.

Best wishes

JWH
