Whilst searching for another DETR report I stumbled across the following press release from Northern Ireland

"NOTES TO EDITOR:

2. During 1999/2000 ‘Excessive speed having regard to the conditions’ was the third most common cause of road traffic injury collisions, accounting for 13 percent of all injury accidents, which resulted in 2,036 casualties."

http://www.nics.gov.uk/press/rd/010514e-rd.htm

This appears to back up all the other material on accident causation factors.

Hi,

correct me if i'm wrong but I think the percentage of accidents caused by excessive speed for the conditions was about the same as this according to the TRL, although we also have to consider that many speed limits have been lowered in many areas, which can alter the figures for accidents over the speed limit.
