I've just had a look at the Swindon and Wiltshire SCP site and found the locations for mobile cameras for this week:

Quote:
A303, A36, M4, A419, A4, A30, A342, A361, A3102, A350, A363, A420, B3098, Salisbury and Chippenham areas

(My bold).

Now I seem to remember something about the M4 cameras being deemed unlawful - was that something to do with them parking illegally on overpasses or something?

I still find it absolutely shocking that they have allowed the deployment of cash vans on the motorway... :( (unless they are including the mobile GATSOs they've got in the roadworks around Bath)

It always make me smile when I see the list of roads that they are planning to hit. Just what do they think they are warning us about!

For example - - how long is the M4?

Is it just a sop to make us think they are working with the motorist instead of against them?

Slightly worse, I think. It's conceived to create an illusion of openness, and to deflect blame. "Don't blame us, we told you where the cameras would be." As such it's actually a very ugly piece of propaganda.

It also has the effect of getting them continuous publicity. Radio stations and newspapers will carry their lists of locations in the mistaken belief that they are performing a public service.

IMHO the only ones doing us a public service are the people taking them down.

Can mobile cameras operate in the dark? I'll keep an eye out for them tonight on my commute from Reading to Swindon.....

Nah. They can but it's extremely marginal and as a rule they do not.

The difficulty hinges around the video system capturing the number plate.

Could this be why more drivers have full beam on all the time?

The scamera operatives probably think they would be too easy a target when it's dark!

Yeah, especially since the motorway overpasses they use around Wiltshire are mostly farm access / small local roads...
