Are the silly burgers in Edinburgh at it again -

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4689330.stm

Drivers caught breaking 20mph speed limits on hundreds of streets across Edinburgh face being landed with a £60 fine and three penalty points.

Zones are now becoming mandatory

Cllr Andrew Burns

Try as i may , all the info i can find , even on here states that the bottom limit for a speedo is 25mph. If so - 20 +10% + 2 = 24 .

ACPO GUIDLINES = FPN at 25 .

Another dash for cash??

I wonder how they will define "residential streets". Presumably, any road with at least one residence anywhere along its length.

It's happening exactly as I, and many others, predicted it would. Increased compliance with 30mph limits is forcing them to lower the limits further in order to maintain cash flow.

Hang on a minute. They're just introducing this now, despite having had zero child deaths (the stated aim of this scheme) for the last 3 years, and only 2.66 child deaths per year for the 3 years before, across the entire city.

Why do they need to enforce this again? It's obviously working just fine as it is.

They claim deaths are down to justify having lower speed limits and speed cameras. However they’re not making enough money out of speed cameras because the governments put a hold on installing any additional cameras. They now need to lower the speed limit to catch more drivers speeding and earn more revenue. It'll be down to 10mph next. :(

They lost their congestion charge, so have to make up the budget shortfall in other ways.

I used to visit Edinburgh a lot, but I haven't been there in over three years now and I'm even less inclined to visit because of this.

They can go and rot!

Nearly 100 years of motoring and the furthest we (as a human race) have managed to progress is to 10mph.

The Moslems don't have to worry about eradicating the 'infidels', we seem to be doing a good enough job of wiping ourselves out

What's happened to that group who made the headlines some months back? The ones that used to target cashcams and destroy them?

I can foresee their return.... (hopefully) :D

Does a car trundling round at up to 20mph use more fuel than one making good progress? If so, would it be cynical to suggest that apart from more income generated via cashcams, the treasury also stands to gain with more fuel duty?

So is there no incentive for the government to allow us to make decent progress on OUR roads?

Actually there is plenty of incentive. Much road travel is concerned with 'economic activity', and the more economic activity the greater the tax take. Resources wasted in traffic delays are even tax deductable (wages costs especially).

I expect it uses the same amount per second, but because the journey is taking longer, it will use more fuel per mile travelled.

Or looking at it the "other way round" - if you're having to drive in a lower gear, the unit distance travelled per engine revolution is less, thus (very simplistically!) you're going to use more fuel to do a specified distance...

So would the environmentalists be able to add their voices against these stupid, arbitrary speed limits from a 'green' perspective?

Yes, unless the true agenda is an anti-car one. Oh look. Did we catch them out?

And do they have a published policy on how speed limits can impact negatively upon the environment?

Anyone know how the 20 limits stand up to the mininum raeding on a speedo - still can't find out the minimum --

e.g. if requirement is for speedo to be legally accurate over 25 - what is legal position of FPN at 25??
