Or you could just go to PePiPoo and get all the information on how to do it yourself for free.

When councils contract out parking enforcement, this is no guarantee of no ticket!

... besides which, it isn't just the motorist who has responsibilities. Councils have the responsibility to pass the correct by-laws to impose restrictions, and they then also have the responsibility to paint the lines on the road properly, and to put up the restriction signs - AND also to maintain them properly. If there is any doubt as to the conformance of signage to the regulations, then the motorist is entitled to the benefit of the doubt.

I'd also politely suggest that, if councils enforce severe on-street parking restrictions without providing commensurate off-street parking, they are failing in part of their duties. But that starts to enter the arena of local politics.

Living in London I'm more than aware of the large number of tickets that are issued illegally. However there are also a larger number that are issued completely by the book - personally I have no sympathy for the selfish "I just popped in to buy some fags" types, it lessens the sympathy I feel for those who have genuinely been 'had'.

This all car users are 'innocent' vibe / it's someone else's fault does nothing to garner sympathy or support for your cause. Why is it so difficult to accept that a significant number of car drivers are selfish muppets?

:P

It isn't - but neither are they ALL villains, as a significant faction within the deep green/cycling lobby would have us believe. MOST drivers (including myself) do their utmost to drive safely, to respect other road users, to park legally, pay tax and insure their vehicles as the law demands, and keep their vehicles roadworthy. Those who do not comply with this deserve the book throwing at them. But sometimes we all need a wee bit of help from authority in observing the law, and zero-tolerance enforcement is not the way to do it.

Can't disagree with this.

Once a 'parking division' is established in the local council there is then a manager in charge of it. Managers tend to calculate their worth in terms of the number of people 'under' them. This prompts empire building. More neighbourhoods are 'convinced' to 'get on board', more traffic wardens are employed, more tickets need to be issued to pay for the cost of running the set-up (revenue from residents parking permits stretches to a fraction of this cost). I know that residents of a number of streets in Pinner, Middx had to organise a petition to stop their local council from imposing the daft parking scheme on them!

But it's not all bad - some areas probably genuinely benefit from residents parking. Also it's a nice job creation scheme for people who are not otherwise fit for much else

But the point I think with traffic and parking is this - it's not the problem, it's a symptom of the problem. Britain needs an efficient, effective, integrated, affordable and pleasant public transport system. Rather like what Switzerland has (yes, affordable - I lived there). Why not also copy the Swiss health system - works like clockwork! I would also go further and suggest the Swiss can teach us a thing or two about democracy. But I would stop short of praising their sense of humour

Cheers,
arthurdent
