http://www.swarb.co.uk/lawb/genClampersBiteDust.shtml makes interesting reading. I wonder whether anyone actually has the courage to put the suggested stickers on their wheels, or to take a clamper to court for "collection of civil debts by causing distress and public humiliation"

Years ago my father in laws van was clamped (by a private firm) while he was attending a breakdown.
He could quite have easily removed the clamp himself and said bollocks to the following threats for criminal damage, etc...but instead he chose to pay the £80 fine to have the vehicle released.

He then immediately had his van towed (by a garage of his choosing) from the spot where it was parked, and sent the clamping company a bill for £550 for damage caused to the ABS wiring & ABS sensor on the wheel to which the clamp was applied, and to cover the cost of the vehicle being towed.

End result after the court hearing was that he was the winner at the end of the day

Sounds like a touch of the "merchant of venice" --you can have your penanty, but not a drop of blood.

I heard somewhere that the French rebeled against wheel clamps by superglueing the locks on any clamps they saw on other people's vehicles. I don't know how true it is but it sounded funny!

Now in todays culture of sueing - could you then sue them for not releasing your vehicle in a reasonable time after you had paid up if the lock failed to open??

That would be poetic justice.
