I'm currently on the "mainland" for a week near Kingston, Surrey. Prompted by the thread about pseudo-crossings, I feel I must share the following other observations of local stupidity:
1) Is it 20 or 30?
Driving down one road, I spotted a 20 repeater, followed later by many others. This was quite a shock as I din't know it was a 20 limit. I didn't exactly slam on the brakes but I did slow down pretty hurriedly.* If a police car or camera had been around I would have slammed on. Now here's the stupid part: the road is a 30. The terminal signs in both directions show 30. So it's either a complete cock-up, or perhaps just as likely a deliberate anti-car measure to cause confusion and worry.
2) Roadworks traffic lights.
There is a patch of roadworks no bigger than a parked car, yet for some reasons they have put temporay traffic lights around it. Why bother? People can mutually negotiate who goes first around parked cars perfectly well. The lights are totally unnecessary. What's worse, is 20 yards down the road is another patch of roadworks, this time with no lights. Of course the queue of cars waiting for the lights blocks the road adjacent to this patch, so no-one can go.
*In contrast to what some would suggest some would suggest, I do actually care about keeping to the speed limit and try my best to do so. I have never been charged with speeding.
