I hope to god that what I think I saw today on my way to and from work was not really what I saw and that there is another explanation.
This morning, coming out of the A13 link tunnel onto Aspen Way, Docklands, heading into London, I saw what looked like four forward facing Talivan style cameras mounted in the glass sided pedestrian bridge just past the tunnel exit.
On my way home, these had been moved to the east bound carriageway.
Further down the A13, heading towards Thurrock, I saw as many as six gantries and pedestrian overpasses that had similar arrangements.
The cameras were mounted on thin yellow poles, poking over the top of the gantries or overpasses. Again they appeared to be forward facing cameras and there was one for each lane. The cameras were attached to white or grey boxes at their bases.
Most of these were unattended, with the exception of the ones in the glass bridge at Aspen Way, where there were a large number of people.
If these were cameras, then it is highly likely that people will be caugh multiple times both going into and coming out of London.
There were no obvious camera vans.
My only other hope is that this was a traffic monitoring exercie rather than a covert speed camera blitz, as there was also a traffic census taking place in Thurrock this morning, that was part of the Thames Gateway Project.
Did anyone else see these cameras and if so what did you make of them?
Hopefully as it looked like they were all forward facing, I think I should have been OK on the bike, but I am 100% sure that if they were in fact speed cameras then thousands, if not tens of thousands of people will be caught .
