Road deaths up a third in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire
by Murdo Maguire — last modified 05-07-2006 08:11

The number of people killed in traffic accidents in the three counties policed by the West Mercia force has risen by about a third compared with last year.
Between January and March, 19 people were killed, 116 seriously injured and 850 slightly hurt in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire. Statistics show that during the same time last year 14 people died.

A spokesman said speed and whether seatbelts were being worn could be the difference between life or death. The force has started a campaign to highlight the factors that significantly increase the number of collisions on the road they police.

The Seven Deadly Sins offensive includes safety tips and advice, statistics and information on penalties via the West Mercia Police website.

A spokesman said: "The force has an active and widespread enforcement campaign focused on collision hotspots, but we are also committed to increasing public awareness of safety. We encourage people who want to improve their driving to look at the Seven Deadly Sins section of West Mercia's website."

the problem is the numbers are so small (not that this is a bad thing) that any difference looks huge as a percentage. A difference of 5 could be just one accident.

The number of fatals if definately too small to draw any conclusions and, thinking back, 6 or eight of the deaths were on the same road, the A41 North of the M54.

Nor do the figures take account of weather variations. Whilst we hardly had any snow, there were certainly a greater number of overnight frosts.

To be of any significance the difference needs to be at least one standard deviation. For random events this is the square root of the number, or about 4 in this case.

The actual difference is 5, so it is likely to be a matter of the random variation of such events unless there is other supporting evidence.

However it does not put the SCP in a good light.

We need a detailed report of where/when/why and trends based on this to make a sensible judgement.

I agree, but given that the partnerships would be making this headline news if the number had DROPPED by a third, I don't have a problem making news from it myself.

That’s what my first thoughts were, the partnerships use what ever figures they can knowing that joe-public wouldn’t know any different. I’m sure if it was deaths down by a third the partnerships would be pasting it all over the place.
