In the letter “ Let's see more speed cameras” by George Morton, The Moors, Kidlington, I regret he has been very badly misinformed by the police propaganda on the benefits of speed cameras.
In a recent article published by the renowned British Medical Journal, see;
http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/rapidpdf ... 1.4Fv1.pdfit quite clearly shows that the casualty rate on our roads has not been reduced by the use of speed cameras and that the police statistics have been fiddled to make it look as though casualties were being reduced.
A similar result was also found in a recent report from the Department for Transport itself. Given the benefit of better engineered cars, improved road engineering and improved casualty treatment, speed cameras have only made things worse by being a dangerous distraction that force motorists to focus attention on their speedometers, rather than anticipating hazards on the road ahead.
It would seem that like legalised highway robbers, the police mostly use their speed guns to demand money with penalties from perfectly safe drivers going about their business as lawfully as they reasonably can.
The speed cameras are just to provide the income needed to keep the “Safety Camera Partnerships” in there well paid and secure jobs at the expense of motorists with no road safety benefit to the community they are supposed to be serving.
