It's fairly obvious that to some, perhaps most, and even possibly all of the regular (and not so regular) posters in FC that we have a wide range of opinions regarding the implementation of speed cameras. On one hand, some are very keen on the administration of justice, i.e. those that break the law should be punished. I don't think any reasonable minded person disgarees with that, after all criminals are the source of great deal of troubles in our communities, and therefore they should be made accountable for their actions. On the other hand, many of us believe that speed cameras cause accidents, since when the driver in front spots the camera, their instinctive nature is to "slam on".

I propose a solution to this dilemma: completely hide the cameras. The administrators of justice get their way, and if no one can see the cameras, no one needs to slam on, because they won't be spotting them.

What part of this don't you get? Irrespective of the motive behind why the speed camera is there, the net result of a speed camera is that it catches drivers who break the law! It doesn't matter why it's there, if you are a careful and competent driver don't speed you have nothing to worry about!

Are you suggesting what I think youre suggesting Simon?

Dont question the LAW because its LAW? Do you think thats how we should abide by the law, don’t question it? Out of interest were you one of the security guards at that labour party conference who man handled that bloke who dared to shout out "Nonsense”?

There are many Laws that are abolished, because they are out of date or there not fit for purpose. What I am suggesting that speed cameras are a dangerous distraction to drivers and are an accident waiting to happen, just because they are LAW and are supposed to enforce speed restrictions doesn’t mean we blindly follow the LAW like robots.

Evidence is growing that suggests regardless of the LAW, these speed cameras are being abused by our government for financial gain and contributing to accidents rather than preventing them, and contradicts there purpose.

If you would like us all to follow the whim of the LAW regardless of safety, then I would suggest you’re deluded. I respect and uphold the Law of the land where it’s practical and common sense to do so, but if these laws threaten or endanger my life, then do you honestly expect me to follow them and respect them? Stuff the LAW if it endangers my safety along with my passengers, and I believe speed cameras do just that.

Might be worth registering to see the full threads

I hang around on adslguide a lot. There is a division on there amongst people like me, camiebz, lisaj and deltathenads and a few others who are basically safe speed types and the 'the law is everything' types ie simon_h and the ed_gallagher. The latter is a labour loony supporter who won't hear a word said against Tiny Blur. Both young uns I think. The majority are like us, a few in the middle that are swayed either way and a few on the extreme law abiding must not ever exceed any speed limit and all those that do are terrible wicked people wot must be burnt at the stake types.

The simon H isn't to be confused with another simon on there who is a lawyer. This simon claims to have qualifications in law and science and worked in both fields. Not very specific.

There is another camera debate going on the skyline GT-R forums. So far 1 dissenter and 3 or 4 people who all believe cameras are a waste of time :) The thread starter was quoting from speedcamera.org about gatsos increasing accidents in roadworks by 55%.
