I posted this to the main site..

Hello

I am 36 years old. I have been mobile on petrol powered machines since I was 6. I guess I am what some would call a 'petrol head'. I have ridden/driven (mostly motorbikes) more than 80% of my life. I don't ride in gangs or packs. I don't really ride socially, but I do clock up more than 10 thousand miles a year (estimate) on Kent, London and Essex roads and motorways.

I am blown away by the content I have read tonight on this site. You have put into words/spreadsheets/examples everything I have ever thought about driving on modern roads. YOU are the guys who don't lane-hog, the ones who pull-over to let a bike past. You are the ones I see who notice that a truck is about to pull out and signal and change position to that effect. Your site explains everything that should be compulsory for a new driver to learn.

As web designer and media type, you have given me an idea to shoot some footage for a movie.

I have managed to ride all these years and not die! so what say we shoot a movie showing a REAL transition from point to point, "disregarding speed limit signs". Allow me to explain first that I am not a speed freak, I completely subscribe to your mantra, but I can provide examples of transitions showing that '30' is too fast and '60' is too slow.

Do you have the facility to provide equipment? (cameras etc..)

If this idea appeals, drop me a line.

Kind Regards

Mike

My email got bounced.. ?

Is this considered to be too radical? I don't think so, I would merely demonstrate 'average' transitional skills, accompanied by expert comment.

comments?

Mike

While a particular speed limit might be inappropriate, breaking that limit is unlawful and AFAICT SafeSpeed does not advocate breaking the law. Right now there are a lot of speedophiles[1] who attempt to discredit Paul and SafeSpeed with false accusations of inciting law breaking. For SafeSpeed to create a video that showed actual speeding would give them all the ammunition they need.

However, a video that showed how rarely the speed limit coincides with the maximum safe speed could be a good thing provided it does not condone speeding and the participants are not recorded speeding.

[1]Speedophile - (n): One who is so obsessed with speed and speeding they believe that speed enforcement alone is the holy grail of road safety.

Paul has been away from home for some time arriving home yesterday afternoon so it may take a while for him to catch up here.

I would not worry about your mail getting bounced, it's more likely down to a technical hitch (full mailbox?) than any sort of automated rejection based on content.

There has been talk of producing a video and it's a subject that keeps coming up so if you have any skills, equipement, contacts etc in this area I'm sure there will be some interest.

Cheers

Paul

I don't know why your email bounced, although we have had to disable some email addresses due to insane amounts of spam. There should be a note to this effect on the web site front page.

I'm interested in talking about your idea, either in here or by email psmith@safespeed.org.uk or by phone on 01862 893030 / 07799 045553.

And :welcome:

Thanks for the welcome.

I am not talking about filming incidents of speeding. Instead demonstrating how sticking to speed limits can be inappropriate (both fast and slow).

I have emailed you Paul with my ramblings.

Mike
