A recent poll on a popular motorcycle safety forum [survival skills within visordown.com] asked riders what further or advanced training they’d consider in 2005. The Institute of Advanced Motorists came top of the poll with 36% of respondents indicating that they are planning to take the IAM advanced motorcycling test this year. The Police run BikeSafe scheme also appeared popular as did track days and additional instructor lead training. Surprisingly nobody said they were interested in taking the RoSPA advanced test, with some respondents claiming anti-motorcycling policy was to blame. In the past the RoSPA advanced test has been upheld as the panicle of civilian advanced driving. However, recent policy statements seem to indicate backing of government speed management policies that have largely been seen as a failure among advanced motorcyclists.

One respondent said “I was keen to take the RoSPA advanced training having heard how good it was, however, having read their policy on speed limiters, cameras and lower speed limit, I was put off”. Looking through RoSPA’s recent policy documents certainly seems to indicate a shift away from improving driving standards towards speed management. RoADA the advanced drivers arm of RoSPA hardly gets a mention. One former member of RoSPA said “they seem to have forgotten that inattention is the biggest killer not speeding, I know quite a few people who have left because of disagreements over policy”. Some independent road safety campaigners [insert] have criticised RoSPA’s policy documents as “a copy and pasting exercise” from DfT publications, with little evidence to suggest any independent research has been performed on many of their speed management policies.

Results:

Do/join IAM 36.36%
Further training with an instructor 30.30%
Do Track day 12.12%
Do BikeSafe 9.09%
Other.... 6.06%
Do Track School 3.03%
DO Off-Road School 3.03%

Do/join RoSPA 0%

Perhaps a useful Press release - they really are turning out some b**** lately

OH YES!

We can do something with this.

Have you got a link into Visordown for the poll? I need to email it to someone...

According to http://www.roadsafetyuk.co.uk/histall.htm , RoADA was originally a separate body called the "League of Safe Drivers", which was taken under RoSPA's wing in 1980.

Perhaps it's time for UDI :P
