Anybody fancy diving in and helping "BlackStuff" (aka JT) out on this thread...

http://www.rallyforum.com/forums/showth ... genumber=1

Ok, this forum is one I more or less abandoned a couple of years ago as it seemed to be frequented by some folk with strange views, but when this thread cropped up I felt duty bound to respond.

What really worries me is that here we have people who are (or have been) actively involved in motorsport, yet still they can't see past the "Speed Kills" nonsense that has been drip-fed to them over the last ten years or so.

Some of these guys really seem to believe that speed cameras on motorways will save lives, and I find that very worrying...

Excellent posts you've made there, JT, hats off.
Well structured, great logic, realistic, human and super-cool.

I especially like:
- the challenge to the chap who admits to speeding on occasion about whether he would approve of a GPS system which would detect and penalise his speeding EVERY TIME, and
- the explanation about why you mentioned that it was a motorsport forum, and that you had credited them with more intelligent appreciation about the actual importance of "speeding" as a safety issue, and
- the speed camera versus lollipop lady point.

I fear that my limited written eloquence and statistical knowledge in such an apparently heavyweight debate may limit me to contributing entries of the "Wot 'e said" type! :yesyes:

Maybe you should suggest rally drivers obey the speed limit during races. After all they are driving on public roads with no seperation with public.

See how interesting it is then...

Well it's certainly turned into one of "those" threads!

Ok, my earlier submissions were "shooting from the lip" a bit, and maybe I wound a few people up slightly. But I'd heartily recommend anyone with half an hour free goes and casts their eye over the topic - particularly from about page 7 onwards - as it's got very interesting now that one or two others have joined in the fray.

Some of them seem to have a very familiar style, if not their signatures... ;)

... and to me it appears to be the anti-camera lobby that is posting the superior entries, systematically undermining the points made by the pro-camera contributors, and making their arguments look more and more dependent upon the legal aspects and less on "real world" road safety.

In fact some of the posts make the anti-camera points so well that perhaps Paul should consider a permanent link to that thread from the SafeSpeed site :hehe:

Bah, they've closed the thread for everyone just because the moderators couldn't control a bit of bickering among one or two individuals.

I think I'll start a new topic there to keep road safety issues (and the negative situation regarding speed cameras) in the limelight...

Very well argued JT - Lancashire please look and LEARN!

Very surprising that blind 'toe the line' response from certain motorsports enthusiasts there. You dont look at your speedo during motorsports after all - its down to skill and judgement  ... I guess it was a certain few there that maybe had similar backrounds to JT - but with only half the wisdom

It's the 'drone' mentality, and I've encountered it in several forums. People seem to support the safe speed approach that setting safe and appropriate speed and being a better driver is more important than blindly driving by the limits, then in the next breath say it is the law and there's nothing we can do about it, then say they break the limit but accept it is a fair cop when they get caught, and say anyone who tries to argue otherwise is 'wriggling out' and just wants to be a lawbreaker.

Contradicting themselves and never accepting their own hypocrisy, yet maintaining they are right.....
