Some time ago I registered the domain name:

http://www.celebrityspeeders.org.uk

I knew full well that I wouldn't be able to maintain the site due to time constraints. It's there, it works, and it's just waiting for someone to take on the task of populating and updating the site.

The objective is to make clear that everyone speeds and to inform those web users who don't understand the complex "Safe Speed" arguments that speeding is not socially unacceptable. It's a counterbalance to the propaganda for the Sun Readers of the world.

Does anyone want to take it on?

I'd place no restrictions on format or content, save to try to ensure that the content could be verified - we don't want to libel rich people! :)

Another possible idea would be to set up a forum system and allow users to maintain the content.

Nah, just sell it on to the Royal family - they've all had tickets by now, and seem to regard them as badges of honour!

Yes, and one of them died in an accident where the car in which she was a passenger was speeding in Paris. True the driver had also been drinking...

Why don't you also have a page devoted to celebrity drug abusers and rapists as well ?

After all, if even celebrities do it, it must be all right.

Surely the tabloids have this market sewn up already?

lmao, excellent!

In fact why don't we pass the task on to the tabloids - in fact I think a certain Mr Morgan is looking for a new career - this man tells me he is so dedicated that if we can't find any pics of celebrity speeders then he knows a man who can make some up!!!

It sounds like a good idea, as long as, for every ((anti)-sociable) celebrity speeder, would you please put up one evil speeder who has either

* knocked down an old lady
* stolen someone's car
* crashed into a bus queue or
* overtaken on a blind bend

Thanks,

bas

Paul as this thread is such a non-runner, can I vote for it to be dropped as a "sticky"?

Except of course, that you know full well that I believe that speed cameras are causing considerable net loss of life. In the context your comment isn't funny, illuminating or helpful.

I hoped you would get the point that it is also not funny, illuminating or helpful to pretend that it's OK to speed because some bone head celebs have done it.

No-one is condoning unsafe driving. On the contrary, I believe that this site has more honest, useful, well-argumented road safety content than, for instance, one "safety"-partnership site I can think of, where political correctness and the vested interests of some contributors colours the discussions of genuine safety issues, and reduces the quality of the interchanges.

Because a posted limit is being exceeded does not automatically mean that dangerous driving is taking place. This is the type of over-simplistic message I would give to my children who would not understand all the complexities, but we are now on an internet forum and the contributors are all adults, I believe.

I am therefore with SafeSpeed on this one.

Don't overestimate yourself - we are all just grown up children descended from monkeys.

Two things. First, the faster you go, the more likely to are to crash seriously and second, the more disregard you show to the law, the more likely it is that you are an unpleasant non-entity.

If anything, there is a weaker correlation in the original plan (which was to host a web page that showed famous people who have committed speeding offences). Why should any relationship exist between one's fame ratio and one's propensity to break the law?

.

The two important correlations are:

1) Speeding is extraordinarily prevalent
2) Even known "upstanding" members of society do it (for example The Solicitor General, Harriet Harman)

The proposed web site is intended to fight spin and deceit about the importance of "speeding" in a populist way. As such I do believe that it is worthy, although I confess I do not consider it worthy of my own time. Judging by the response here neither does anyone else.

So be it.

On your first point - have you read any of Paul's research on "free travelling speed" versus collision speed" ?
On your second point - what a load of nonsense.

I would expect that there is indeed a relationship between fame and propensity to break the law. After all, fame usually requires above average self-belief/confidence/arrogance and these attributes would certainly contribute to an increased willingness to refuse to abide by (apparently unfair/nonsense) laws. After all, laws/rules are not challenged by persons with unconfident/apathetic natures, are they ?

I always saw the Celebrity Speeders thing as "Safe Speed for Sun readers" <ducks>

It's still available if anyone wants to take it on.
