Things are happening so fast already today that I'm nowhere near managing to monitor broadcast news (TV, radio, teletext)

Can folk who hear news please post a short note in here about what's been said, where and by who?

video 'road casualties down'
Brake lass seems almost apologetic to me with news that stats may not add up.

I see they've changed the video Paul.
I hope you caught the original with Jools Townsend? from Brake as the studio interviewee seemed to take the usual line.
Sorry if you missed it but she basically said that the figures put things in a new light.
I think she had smelled the coffee.

Safe Speed said the suggestion that speeding or excessive speed for the conditions was a factor in only 15% of accidents showed the "entire road safety policy has been based on dodgy data".

Founder Paul Smith added: "Safe Speed has been pointing out for years that the concentration on speeding was a deadly mistake. Speed cameras must be scrapped. Heads must roll."

After reading the report, the first two things that come to mind are:-

1. Accidents where "driver using a mobile phone" show as 0% (defined in the footnotes as "zero or negligible values.. 0.1 - 0.5%) so, is all the excitement over phones just hype?

2. Of the 5% of all accidents, but more importantly the 12% fatals and 7% serious where "exceeding the speed limit" is a factor, I'd like to see a breakdown indicating what proportion of those percentages were also drunk, on drugs, stolen cars, being chased by the police, etc.

The report reads very much like they're doing all they can to "big up" the contribution of speed to the stats, which would be funny if it wasn't so easy to mislead the average innumerate journalist! :-(

For some reason I just randomly posted this in the clubhouse:

I wrote:
Don't know how/where this fits in to the above, but PM (R4) headlined the story by saying something like "it has been shown that twice as many accidents are caused by inattention than by speeding"

ITV teletext have massively shifted their position in the last couple of hours. They are coming our way folks.
