On Feb. 27, 2007 a new law came into effect making it an offence for persons driving a motor vehicle to use a mobile telephone at the same time, except the hands free types. Drivers can now be penalised with a fixed penalty and 3 penalty points on their licences.

I think the thread title and poll question/options are self explanatory, so I'll avoid adding my own input until after the poll closes in 14 days.

Based upon my own observations, I'd be glad to hear from as many people as possible on this issue.

I think if it hadn't been specifically outlawed, it would be much more widespread than it is at present, and indeed would be widely regarded as normal practice when driving.

Obviously it could have been more widespread if there had not been a ban but I have not noticed a decrease in people doing it except for about month after the ban. I would say it's back to pre-ban levels at least.

One of several laws of unintended consequences here are people stopping in very silly and often dangerous places to field calls.

I also noticed that for a few weeks when the ban initially came in.

Overall I think it made a very very small difference, what's more the people who have stopped were probably not the most dangerous ones.

I'm sure there are lots of unused handsfree kits rattling around in gloveboxes as well.

But you can virtually guarantee the diver weaving around in front of you is on the phone.

My impression is that the law has made little difference to mobile phone usage by drivers. All that's happening is that a few people are now getting nicked for it.

General conclusion: It's all bollox and the government shouldn't have bothered with it. HTH.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

People over here so desperately want mobile phones to be dangerous. I've never understood that.
