I want to run a poll on 'the worst driving experience'. I'm thinking more about specific roads than anything else, but I'm open to offers.

My nomination is: M42. It's a Mickey Mouse Nightmare.

When we have a rage of suggestions, I'll start a poll.

What road (/ road type / road condition) gives you the worst driving experience?

M6/M5 junction especially south bound with the everlasting bridge repairs going on. :(

M1, M3, M8 and the A523 through Staffs.

The motorways because for some reason they seem to attract more than their fair share of MLMs and the A523 because it's the most uncomfortable road to drive on due to the propensity to get stuck behind HGV's at 40 MPH and the 50 MPH Gatso's every 100 yards making it impossible to overtake even though there're plenty of opportunities to do so.

M4 / M5 junction - lanes are WAY too wide and folks try to squeeze past you.

Any A-road in Wiltshire because the surface condition is appauling.

This isn't really going the way I expected. I thought that to be 'worst' there would be some strong obvious feature that raised it above all others.

If I can't 'hang it on a hook' the eventual intended publicity just won't work.

When I nominated M42, I really intended to highlight in VSL madness which to me is absolutely outstanding. In fact, if I could delete the M42 from my sat nav I think I would do so.

edit: What I need is a high 'recognition factor' - people reading must largely instantly recognise the road (etc) in question.

In that case, the utter lack of high-speed east-west roads anywhere north of the M4!

M25 variable speed section. Came through last night and had one of those highly variable limits in action :60: :50: :60: :40: :60: FFS just pick one will you :banghead:

Edited to add: You can add any variable limit motorway to that list

I'd go with M42 every time. Not only the VSL but the hard shoulder running is crazy and very memorable.

Have you been on it Paul?

Again and again. And hopefully never again.

I haven't seen the hard shoulder madness in operation.

where do i start?

the one i dread is the A9 perth to inverness. i hate that stretch of 111 miles of nothing. if it was 111 miles in the opposite direction, it would involve at least 2 stops to grab a coffee to take with me but there is no option to do that on the A9. far too monotonous and that has to have a negative effect on road safety

You mean 111 miles of fantastic scenery and good quality A road?

Well, apart from Saturday in summer when it's a 111 mile 50mph queue.

Worst? I suppose anywhere with heavy congestion. Especially when you know the roads which were planned and which would have improved or eliminated the situation were shelved for political reasons.

Nah! I absolutely love that road. Are you speaking about it from driving a truck Scanny? Even then some of the scenery is amazing.

Have you tried it in a decent car?

I would vote for the A523/A52 between Leek and Ashbourne. 15 miles of good-quality, rural A-road - the sort of road that in less politically correct times would have been described as "fast" - all reduced to 50 mph, with 40 limits through a couple of non-existent "hamlets" and about 9 Gatsos in each direction. Once pleasurable motoring reduced to tedium, fear and misery at a stroke :x

The M42 to the south of the M6,and again the A42 to the M1 -

First one to show how idiotic they can be , second one with the elephant races shows how to spoil the ship for a ha pence worth of paint - should have been 3 lanes from build. Drove it just after it was open - beautiful -(especially after the route from here to Nottingham), now - a two lane traffic jam.

Any decent fast safe road that's been reduced to 30 or 40mph...

I'm sure we all recognise the type of road...

To elaborate on my vote for the A357, it's one of those in-and-out-of-villages-and-hamlets type A-roads, and as such the speed limit goes up and down like a yo-yo between 30 and NSL, but mainly 30-40. To add to this it has the full spectrum of traffic calming tools, such as chicanes and random traffic-lighted single lane sections. I hate this kind of utterly ruined rural A-road, and this is a prime example.
