due to ongoing debates, i feel strongly about enforcing the speed lmit within residential areas, compared to NSL , duals and motorways,

i have not entered a no enforcement poll  )suprise suprise)

This is interesting, but I don't think we quite have the right question. Actually I think there are two questions with three answers each.

How would it be if we changed the polls to two polls as follows:

1) Is it more useful to road safety to put speed cameras...
-in NSL zones
-in 30mph zones
-equal

2) Is it more acceptable to use speed cameras...
-in NSL zones
-in 30mph zones
-equal

Would that be better? Or any further improvements?

I cannot reply to this poll as I think the question you should be asking is which location is the most appropriate to enforce: one with few hazards or one with many...

Unfortunately speed limits have no bearing on this any more, so 30 or NSL is a flawed poll.

I tend to agree - but can we create a similar poll that isn't flawed?

to be honest i did not think this poll would go far, if i put an option of no cameras, cameras in 30mph areas or NSl,

in the context of this forum the no cameras would have 100% votes

as i have said before i do not agree with the current limits on duals and motorways, but as on a recent trip on the M6 found 70mph quite annoying

but i will stand by enforcement on 30 mph

but lets say we increase the 30mph to 40 mph limit in residential areas will that satisfy everyone or should we go to 50mph / 60 mph (to the mods if ou want to move this to a new post feel free)

I don't think that many people around here want the general 30mph speed limit increased. I certainly don't. I want sensitive and discretionary enforcement.

But I'll set up a poll.

I would vote for housing estates rather than trunk roads. The current regime means camers are predestined to land on trunk routes.

bad policy gets bad results

Agreed with T2006, this is impossible to answer. If you're going to deploy a speed camera, it should be clearly visible and located just ahead of a known hazard where there is strong evidence to suggest that slowing traffic to below the speed limit will reduce collisions. This could be on either a 30mph urban road or an NSL rural road, it all depends...

Pretty much the same as other posters, cameras should be where there is a significant risk that can be reduced by reducing speed.

But on the other hand, putting in a camera brings with it the extra risk of distraction from the hazard(s) to pay homage to the numerical limit.

True, an oddball, would prefer to have better signage, VAS etc to give good warning before cameras, but if they are to be used then need to be highly visable not this crap about being hi viz underneath an overgrown tree.

Possibly this would be better off in brainstorming, but the road markings used prior to junctions - yellow lines that get closer as you approach the hazard would be effective.

I certainly don't want the 30mph limit increased in residential or heavily built up areas. What I do disagree with however, is many local councils interpretaion of what constitues a 'built up area'. Local councils have very successfully destroyed credibility the important 30mph speed limit had.

Unfortunately the majority of enforcement that occurs in my local area tends to be on these 'new 30mph in force' roads that used to be NSL until a few years ago. Why don't the scp's enforce the speed limit where exceeding the limit is dangerous and not just a technical offence? Revenue?
