Many if not most people who are registered with SafeSpeed believe that Speed Camera Policy, including mobile vans, represents excessive enforcement which has had a damaging effect on the motoring scene in Britain. It is recorded that the overall safety record has not improved, despite outlandish claims of success being made by those in favour of cameras. It is further recorded in official figures released recently that excessive speed accounts for less than 5% of accidents.

Within the past few days, I was directed to a website which showed dozens of pictures of vandalised speed cameras which had been burned to a crisp by having a tyre placed around them which was then set alight. Elsewhere in this forum, a poll asked what you would do if you saw someone vandalising a speed camera. Almost all the respondents said they would turn a blind eye - and yet the crime of which I speak is known as Criminal Damage.

What has happened to the British motoring public in the past 10 years or so? It is clear from the very existence of this site and others that the ordinary members of the British motoring public are aggrieved, and feel that they are being victimised.

In this poll, I seek to gauge the mood of the board subscribers, and their attitude to current road policy. I simply want to know what you think is or has been the worst consequence of speed camera policy.

I shall not be casting a vote in this poll, which runs for 7 days.

I'd vote for 'road safety culture damage'. I think the whole speed kills and speed camera thing has:

- changed beliefs
- altered the definition of safety targets
- changed priorities
- replaced skills, attitudes and responsibilities

I think the strength and quality of our road safety culture has been our greatest road safety asset, and that it has been seriously damaged by bad information.

Are choices 6 and 8 too similar to differentiate?

I'll define these choices here as I intended them to be interpreted.
  • Undermining respect for law etc. - the situation we have arrived at in which SS subscribers voted almost unanimously to turn a blind eye to an act of criminal damage - people damaging a speed camera, for example.
  • Alienation - the feeling of bitterness towards police, loss of confidence in their purpose etc.
But you're right. These two are separated by a fine line.

All of the above is my answer; speed camera policy and silly limits have had a negative effect in almost every way possible, there is no single box I could tick as for the most severe effect. Driving standards are declining in a big way as a result of this and there is no remedy on the horizon.

When are you going to tell us the speed limit for your previous poll, DM? :)
