In Gear -
In normal trafficYou are preaching to the converted about lane use - i can be seen fast enough to make good time and slow enough not to upset your mates - must be doing something right -so far in a lot of years they have not objected to my speed or lane use.
At the times i quoted it is not a question of an empty lane - all are busy.
It is a choice of picking the lane that you think is safer according to your point of view.
L1 - every chance of becoming HGV sandwich :x
L3 - the favorite choice of whitevan man and sales reps. Usually you can see when this happens. Traffic grinds to a halt.Surprisingly when a gap occurs in L2 vehicles jump into L2 ,work their way past the stranded q in L3 and rejoin it.
L2 always seems free of the L3 effect and relatively free of HGV.

As i said the issue of roadworks was brought up -WHY- along with forcing plonker to merge at a reasonable time, not at the head of the Q. Diversion perhaps.

Peter E -
"Unfortunately there is a breed of impatient drivers who insist on diving into any gap that becomes available, even if overall it won't improve their progress."

The point i was trying to make and how to avoid it.
As i said to ingear i find that with congested lanes L2 is smoother flowing - is it because all /most drivers in it have realised that by being courteous and patient traffic flows smoother? :x
NOT BECAUSE I WANT TO STOP IN IT. -I much prefer a partially empty L1.

... and on that long uphill drag on the M25, the crawler lane is often the one to save a good 5 minutes.... ;-)

Its ridiculous isn't it? You'd think that having tried it a few times they'd give up, but they don't seem to do they?
And of course having changed lanes and realised that the 'gap' that they thought had appeared was in fact a more thoughtful drivers safety space, they then try and regain the lane they were originally in, as if the lesser mortals should simply part like the red sea as they make their imperious way
With this kind of individual, I derive a small amount of pleasure in seeing their impatience backfire completely as they dissapear behind me in a now stationary lane

Rigpig -WILL LEMMINGS EVER GIVE UP THROWING THEMSELVES OVER CLIFFS?

The only consolation i have is that by sticking to one lane i usually find that the weaver bird ends up dissapearing up his own gap.

I only floated this post with the idea of promoting a discussion on how to cope with this sort of idiot - to see if anyone else had other ideas ?

So long as those other cars on the motorway are driven by human beings, you'll always get the 'advantage takers' - people who'll use your sense of doing the right thing to gain themselves an advantage. It's true of all aspects of life.
In other words, I don't believe there is anything you can realistically do except grit your teeth and console yourself in the knowledge that it is you and not they that are attempting to keep the traffic flowing smoothly and safely.
