Judder is amazingly complex. Changing anything might seem to cure it, only for it to return soon.

My top guesses for judder are as follows (in order of attention):

- contaminated screen
- worn out blades
- weak tension spring
- stiff tension pivot
- play in mechanism
- loose mountings

Once 'the obvious' has been eliminated, the next thing I'd do would be change the wiper arms.

A gentle bend or twist of the wiper arm works for me, changing the angle and or pressure of the blade on the screen.

Yeah - that's another one. Mostly ANY change will stop it (wiper judder), at least for a while.

If the kids are letting the the wipers arms slap down they will bend under the impact and tension of the springs.

Mike, shoot the kids???? Will stop the root cause of the problem

I've tried rainx and wasn't too impressed, but have tried the Halfords stuff and actually found it works better.

With both, I really made sure the the screen was cleaned and prepped well before applying.

That's all very well until you discover that it's wearing out with horrible smearing on a filthy night 200 miles from home.

Even assuming that you've got more rain-x and clean cloths, what do you do then? Apply it to a wet windscreen while standing in the rain?

I've been tempted to wire up a high voltage to them, but then I'd probably get sued... I know they're only wipers, but when you're going through 4 or 5 sets of blades a year... It gets a bit much... (yes I've used about 5 sets of wipers in the past year - mainly due to them breaking mid-wipe!)

Try this:

Every time the wipers park, the tips of the rubber blades in contact with the glass are always pointing UP the screen. Lift the wipers off the screen a little, push them down (gently) beyond their park position. Then let them back down on to the scrren and let them resume their natural position. This should leave the rubbers pointing DOWN the screen (towards the bonnet). Just leave them like that until the next time it rains.

I find this works for me.

Wiper blades loose their elasticity with time - even if they don't tear or wear out. As they spend the vast majority of their time in the "parked" position, they eventually take a "set" in that direction. When you next turn the wipers on, they can be too stiff (depending on spring tension and screen drag) to flip themselves over as the arm starts to move so they travel up the screen still pointing upwards - causing judder.

It's by no means the only cause and it won't work forever but it helps me get more life out of a set of blades!

To be fair Paul, I never got to that stage, with the amount of driving I did every two months it was all taken off and redone, downside is that it is a bloody lot of work. So have used it like but is it worth the work needed to keep it up to scratch???

One thing regarding smering (at a slight tangent) is car washes that have a wax cycle, I don't use it myself but if I've gone through a car wash where wax has been used recently it realy smears the windows up.
