Car number plate amnesty launched
A car registration number plate amnesty has been launched by police in the North Somerset area.
In 2005, more than 50 plates were taken from vehicles. This year, more than 100 were taken between April and October.
Police believe in most cases they were taken as part of a prank, although it is thought some may have been used to mask real plates during a crime.
As with the recent knife amnesty, bins are being put outside police stations for the deposit of stolen plates.
Insp Yannis Georgiou said: "Whether the plates are collected for fun or part of a seemingly innocuous prank, or for more sinister reasons, it has become an increasing burden on victims.
"And this type of crime also causes a real nuisance and anxiety for those who have had number plates taken from their vehicles."
The special bins are being placed outside police stations in Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon, Nailsea and Portishead.
"Those depositing the number plates can do so anonymously - no questions will be asked," said Insp Georgiou.

Part of a prank? Who do they think they are kidding? This is the beginning of the end of the registration process. By the time 15% of vehicles have incorrect registration, the system is WAY out of control. At this rate, I'll give it five years. Don't they know how dangerous this situation is becoming?
