What I want to know is how many motorists have been wrongly convicted in the camera era?

Same cock up as the Farnborough Talivan made by the sounds of things. Funnily enough they came out with much the same responses. Human error, very rare, apologies to affected drivers, won't happen again because someone's gone on a training course, blah blah blah. Well, that's my faith in the pratnerships restored.

I doubt anybody knows, but the same error was made at opposite ends of the country so I suspect it's not as rare as they claim. There have probably been plenty more wrongful convictions that we'll never know about because the driver has quietly paid up.

It would be interesting to know if the talivan operators that received the additional training were police officers or civilians? If they aare civilians then all fines and points should be overturned:

It is my understanding that the precedent of dpp v Welton 2004 confirms that a civilian is not authorised or empowered to offer the primary opinion evidence in a speeding prosecution. In fact the precedent and case law says that a police officer’s opinion is the primary evidence in such speeding prosecutions. The device in the van merely provides corroboration of the police officers opinion. If two police officers are present, and in their expert judgement, they consider you to be speeding then this is sufficient evidence. However as the penalty for speeding increases with the magnitude of the transgression, the device provides the requried information to the magistrates
