Looking at who starts the majority of the threads here, I'm not surprised!

Amazingly, theres also a cycling forum on Pistonheads. Although we tend to talk more about gadgets and POOOWWEERRR than you might expect from a cycling forum :D

talking of power... my chain snapped on the way home yesterday

although it's more likely to do with the fact its probably the best part of 10yrs old rather than my immense stay bending power output

i carry the tools to fix it but figured it was a warmer option to scoot the remaining 2miles home.

fog's come down again.... hoping it clears at some point for my longest ride of the winter tomorrow.

I am new on here, and like you am a little surprised. Most of the posts are to be originated by 'In Gear' who seems to post in anti-cycling style. I had presumed that there would be pro and anti posts in here. But, it is all very confusing

I don't think he's necessarily anti-cycling, just opinionated which is fine.

Most of this board is basically his own blog / commentary on whatever the comic says.

I got the impression 'In Gear' was a keen, but responsible, cyclist.

Has he ever posted anything to suggest otherwise?

IG is a very keen cyclist.. as am I.

Most of the threads on here are taken from the cycling mags.. and he posts up the CW wonder foods and tries to prove he can - er - do more than boil the odd egg.

He loves the letter pages and will post them up .. with comment

I look in the local press mostly for the funnies, the charity rides, the local flavours - and most of them are here for people to feel free to post up how they viewed these articles which we think have some potential for reasoned debate.

IG's Cycling "course" on here - way back into archives now - is a mix of the best of Cycle Craft and the course as given to cycling police. I cannot ride up and down steps like he does.. :rotfl: and I do struggle to keep up with him on the occasions when I ride with him...

On the Austrian epic .. I "limped" in behind the whole bloomin' lot of 'em..

But ride he does and at least the thread on here actually have something to do with cycling  Best of the mags .. but for "greeny" issues ..... to many of C+ rides require an airplane to get there. CW are at least in the country and Europe. and thus "greener" :P:

In fact .. look carefull at back issues.. you will find that he has more or less copy typed the magazine and then put in a couple of smilies - put in a couple of asides to try to get a conversation at least going. He can hardly scan the whole mag else he'd get into bother with copyright.. so he will flick through and look for something which will invite conversation whereby hopefully a negotiated common ground and harmony between drivers and cyclists sharing the roads can be established. Only some people only see "car driver v cyclist" or want to own both footpath and road alike... and seem to think internet chatrooms are a place to display tantrums of quite frankly bizarre abuse.

All the fora .. PH. .. SS and "for cyclists only sites" will post up the stuff which appears in the Waily and Sexpress for comments. We will look to address the Nigel Havers type rants with a bit of humour, post up the bits we agree with and the bits we disagree with in such pieces .. and try to establish what can be done to get Nigel to eat his words and mount a bicycle :hehe:

The "for cyclist only sites" seem to fasten only on the negative and post up rabid abuse and just give the likes of Havers and Jezza even more ammo to write up in tomorrow's recycling skip

So.. best to look at what they say.. take on board the negatives and try to redress them as a grown up  .. and then take the positives to persuade Paul to get his bum on a nice comfy gel saddle and a decently padded bit of lycra :P and head down on that rather wicked downhill around Auchintore and Loch Linnhe :yikes:

Blimey you lot take things literally!

He was being what we call up 'ere in cloth cap and clogs land - "Nowty Gears" :hehe:

I think you do know darned well that we are Catholics (oops - not perhaps wise to admit this either given the fracas om a "for cyclists only forum" over the Pope, a German guy called Andreas.. who was so - er Catholic - if you sawed in half - emblazoned like a stick of Blackpoo! rock :hehe:... aided and abetted by the Swiss Andreas who was up until then a "fallen Catholic" and ended up having to read his Bible at serious cruising speed to keep up with the argument and post in synch with his little chum. :rotfl:

We had words when we found out about all that.. But brought up as Catholics .. and I guess when we die we will want the last rites as Catholics like the late Dave Allen can jest about their religion.. but will always instinctively "cross themselves and light candles" Yes .. I will be attending Midnight Mass with my wife and kids.

IG was being a bit "nowty" given the nature of the post to him. I think you must surely realise that it was quite an unpleasant and uncalled for post and I think he was really suggesting that the guy needed help... but also trying to suggest he was part of a minority cult at the same time as he just referred to Dianetrics which apparently preceded the writer's later "Scientology" thing as I understand.. But then I know very little about Scientology and don't really want to know.

But some of these on a "for cyclists only" place... do not seem to do much else than play on the internet all day.

Andreas occasionally pops up on radarfalle and somewhere else. IG only posts on here and to a "for cops only"

I post on here and on PH as does my wife.

We ain't got time for playing around on the internet chat room sites from 8 am to 4.30 pm as a constant. We do have committents to our jobs after all and to those paying us to do them. Some of the rather .. um.. in politically correct lingo attempt - and trying to be polite given what the person did post and has posted somewhere else "exciteable" people claim they commute to work and are productive when they are at work. I look at the post volume, timing and length of the posts..

When you do that .. you cannot help but .. well .. form an opinion as to veracity of their claims of "productivity in terms of completed and satisfactory worK".. can you?

It also seems that he knows of someone via his wife or sister who had to do one of those "touchy feely nonsense" sessions at work. The "guru" leading the course told the person he knows of about "needing Dianetrics to counter stress levels." IG's the sort of person you look to for a blunt take on life :hehe: Person asked IG if he'd heard of it and if he had .. what did he think of it? IG says he was his normal sledge hammer self once he'd stopped laughing ... at what the person said she had to do on this course :hehe: (Something to do with the StUN and standing on a table..... :?)

He reckoned the person was "suppressing anger" (per the alleged guru) as a result of having to behave like a t:censored:t in public

Spoke on phone to him jsut before he disappeared to his choir thing in the local Cathedral and asked him about that post.

Could feel the laid back grin down the phone ... He said he just could not resist it.. he'd had to look up what it was in the first place and thought it the sort of thing the poster might be into :P

But if someone thinks Scientology is for them..free country and they can if they want to same as I have the freedom to practise my own faith. Likewise - if they think Dianetrics which on looking it up appears to be recognising, confronting and getting over a perceived upset .. sounds almost like hynotism - regression as it seems from a quick scan of the blurb that one "closes one's eyes and you recall the problem and confront it"

I think much depends on the person and the mentor .. like normal counselling really....

But what works for one does not work for others and really I'd refer the rather violent poster concerned in that other thread to a man holding a strait jacket in one hand the and keys to a padded cell in the other. :hehe:

I dunno whose the worse wind-up merchant in my wife's over large family.

But read his posts again mate. and er - :welcome: ...

Then perhaps you needed the psychiatrist or a pyschologist/counsellor more specialised to your specific needs in the first place?

I find cycling and walking very therapeutic - along with my golf and the choir. I thus only just about find just enough time to chat on here and this is my leisure time in which I am open to friendly chat and try help heal the "us/them" rifts with police v public. I do not indulge in silly venomous posts and apart from the odd mention of what goes on a monthly comic and much from a serious weekly - and that's about it. Hardly the stuff which warrants abuse such as that of "safebooze"!

Was asked what I thought about Dianetics - whatever  after an acquaintance was subject to one of those daft "courses" some bosses appear duped into putting their staff through. Person was required to do a number of silly tasks - which as a quiet person.. found it is caused feelings of self consciousness and eventually .. the acquaintance who is normally quiet and placid by nature - erupted. This was interpreted by said "guru" as "having suppressed anger" and the person leading this course rummaged around and handed ovr a book on "Dianetics" - telling the chap/chappesses in question to read the first 70 pages.

I admit to falling about in total disbelief that this sort of "pigeon management with the runs" still goes on :? and then decided to have little look-see. Not really saying much different in terms of accepting and coming to terms with whatever real or perceived "grudge" - and basically, mate, from the tone of that post, the rabid nonsense which is posted and which gets in the way of our normal discussion on real safety issues - getting the COAST message out to all those angry drivers who hit this site looking for help and sometimes laying into me as "someone who enforces these laws" - then just maybe they will take COAST on board as the five main principles which control their speed to safe and legal levels as well as help them not collide with anything at any darned speed.
